I tried to load dd-wrt.v24_vpn_generic.bin after trying and testing dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin which has no OpenVPN support as far as i could see. Before that i tried the dd-wrt.v23 SP2 on my WL-500G. That had no parallelport support so i thought i could try i release candidate.

The first 2 firmware worked fine, but the dd-wrt.v24_vpn_generic.bin screwed up my device somehow. I think i can find the IP-adress but it is not responding to the standard username (root) and password (admin)

What is the best i can do now?

Assuming you did a hard reset before and after you upgraded the firmware.

telnet into the router.

erase nvram
reboot

Then try to get into the web gui again....if that still fails...tftp a version of firmware to the router.

What do yoy mean by hard reset?

And how can i tftp a firmware TO the router? Will it execute it by itself?

I made an arp table for the mac-adress of the device and i responded to the pinging. But a telnet session didn't work. What port should i use?

First try a hard reset.

hold reset button 30 seconds, unplug router still holding reset for 30 seconds, plug it back in still holding a final 30 seconds.

See if that lets you get in the unit

root/admin

Then get a copy of the tftp.exe program from linksys.com

You can use it to update firmware....generally, if you can ping the unit...you can tftp to it also.

Did you try to telnet in?

I tried to do as described in this document: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Recover_from_a_Bad_Flash#Recovering_with_TFTP
But no luck at all. Even with my networkcard at 10Mb/half duplex it didn't work.

The powerbutton is flashing every second. That is all it does.

Strange thing is that it is connected to our network here, it was untill today only a wireless gateway. My PC gets the IP-adress from the network when i connect to the WL-500G and not from the WL-500G.

OK, RTFM is still a thing one needs to remind.

"If the LED flashes steady every second the device is waiting for an update. ...."

So i used the ASUS Recovery utility and loaded dd-wrt.v23_vpn_asus.trx .

Everything works fine for now.

I will test the OpenVPN connection tomorrow.

THANKS FOR HELPING ME !!

One small question: if the device is only a switch for most situations, and i want to use OpenVPN. What would be the best setting for the operating mode?
