Following valdesc.tol's instructions with a new untouched/unflashed AR430W, I got lost at the very end with configuring the bootscript because there were no instructions. I cluelessly entered a few values and I want to know if I potentially messed anything up. Mind you DD-WRT V24 Final is on the device now.

Prompts and what I entered:
Gateway IP address: 192.168.1.1
Local IP address: 192.168.1.1
Local IP address mask: 255.255.255.0

After I entered the values above, I got freaked with the Default server IP address prompt and just hit return for the rest of the ride. After resetting, I was able to access the DD-WRT web interface. Since I was nervous, I reset the router to its defaults. Unfortunately, I found the rest of the instructions in another post by dc too late. This router is going to be installed in Hawaii and I need to make sure it just works since I will be on the mainland and the user in Hawaii doesn't have a clue. Any help would be appreciated.

If it worked and you got into the interface, then it will be fine. The config you did in redboot ONLY affects redboot, they apply for the x amount of time you set for it to wait until it boots DD-WRT. After DD-WRT boots, none of that redboot config mean anything.

I advise you to disable the WAN Traffic Counter under Services.

It looks like a block of text, I'd split it into obvious and labeled sections. Also, make the font used for the commands different from the body font.

Hello,
I was researching on how to flash my Airlink AR430W, but there are so many sets of instructions and tips. I have tried several of them, however i always seem to get lost , or somthing seems to not work.
Could someone please post a set of instructions for Windows XP where i can follow them step by step and successfully put the dd-wrt firmware on my router?
Thanks in advance!

My ar430w router flashed perfectly fine. I was able to get into the setup. I tried to set up wds using it as the client router and it didn't work. The router won't give out an ip now since the dhcp is off and when I set up a static ip on my computer I still can't connect to the router. I tried to start from scratch using tftp but I can't access it. Any tips to get this lovely paper weight going again?

I offer you my excuses for the disadvantages that this had produced to you.
Nevertheless, the instructions are present. Erroneously mixed in context.

I have checked and updated the procedure. It is supposed that the host bootloader is 192.168.1.2 instead of 192.168.20.80 to allow the load of linux.bin. The intrucción was updated and fulfil a new firmware update successfully. check it again. Regards

To go from v24-RC7 to v24-final you can just use the web interface and the ar430w-firmware.bin file.

If you are going from an earlier version (rc5.2 or rc6) you need to either follow the redboot path to create the new linux file system in nvram -or- if you've applied the update and your router appears 'hung' you can go into redboot and load a new boot script (please note the first 'fis load' below is the (existing - no longer working boot script) and the second (after the >>>) is what you enter to get it to work with the new firmware):

First, restart the router and get into redboot (instructions elsewhere...) then when you see the "DD-WRT>" prompt then away you go:

DD-WRT> fconfig
Run script at boot: true
Boot script:
.. fis load -l vmlinux.bin.l7
.. exec
Enter script, terminate with empty line
>> fis load -l linux
>> exec
>>
Boot script timeout (1000ms resolution): 3
Use BOOTP for network configuration: false
Gateway IP address:
Local IP address:
Local IP address mask:
Default server IP address:
Console baud rate: 9600
GDB connection port: 9000
Force console for special debug messages: false
Network debug at boot time: false
Update RedBoot non-volatile configuration - continue (y/n)? y
... Erase from 0xbffe0000-0xbfff0000: .
... Program from 0x80ff0000-0x81000000 at 0xbffe0000: .
DD-WRT> reset

Hi I did exactly like you suggested it even showed "fis load -l linux" after reset and reboot I was not able to access the dd-wrt web interface... I have verified my ip etc.,

Also, Is there any way I can bring back my ar430 to factory status, so there is no dd-wrt and can re-do this all over again.

thanks for the help..

Hoping somebody can help me get back on track for flashing my AR430W.

I was following these directions since it seemed the clearest for Win XP users:
http://micront.com/howto/routers/airlink101-ar430w/flashing-ar430w-with-dd-wrt.html

Everything went exactly as described, from getting into redboot, to loading ap61.ram from tftp, up until it said to switch my IP to 192.168.1.23 and telnet into 192.168.1.1. At that point, Putty would not connect and I could not ping 192.168.1.1 either.

I tried it again with the same results.

However, now when I try it, the initial pinging at 192.168.20.81 never gets any response so I can't tell when to connect to redboot. I've tried several resets and still nothing.

Is this thing bricked already? I didn't even think I got to the flashing part yet. Anything I can do to get back on track?

I was using DD-WRT v24 sp1 instead of v24 and then upgrading later like the instructions say; is this part of the problem?

Thanks.

I did start out using the instructions in the D/L area, but they were very hard to understand and I tried waiting 5 sec before trying to telnet into redboot about 20 times with zero success so when the other instructions had the pinging method, that got me into redboot on the second try so I went from there. With the pinging method, the wait time was more like 15-20 seconds, not 5 sec, so with that type of variation, I don't know how one could just hit it randomly without the pinging as an indicator.

In any case, now I can't get into redboot either way so my question now is: did loading ap61.ram already change something (persistent through power-cycles and resets) that I won't be able to get into redboot again? Is there some way to start over?

Thanks.

Using on ar430w that I got last year... never had the time to try with dd-wrt, but finally I decided to try it. I followed the instructions here:

http://micront.com/howto/routers/airlink101-ar430w/flashing-ar430w-with-dd-wrt.html

and everything went on smoothly until I got to "fis create linux" where the putty window disconnected. I managed to reconnect and continue where it left off.

However, after everything was done and rebooted, I couldn't acquire an address at all. I tried a few times but same issue. So I tried to get back to RedBoot so that I can start all over again, but to no avail (after setting my pc's ip to 192.168.1.23). ping 192.168.1.1 gives me "Request Time Out". I tried connecting to 192.168.1.1, but it always give "Connection closed by remote host"

However, I can actually get into DD-WRT, by setting my pc's ip to 192.168.1.22 and then telnet into 192.168.1.23 (connected to WAN side of the router). However, at this stage, I have no idea what to do. I cannot set my pc's ip to 192.168.1.23 as it complains that it conflicts with something else on the network (probably referring to the WAN side of the router).

Any idea what I can do?

Thanks.

I bailed DD-WRT firmware and went back to Airlink's original, primarily because my AR430W was using RC5 and I could not figure how to safely get to V24.

This is what I did:(gleened from the DIR300 method, but fixed problems)
Pretty easy when you follow:

The below restores the AR430W to the OEM boot (Dlink DIR300 Emergency Recovery Utility), which will allow flashing back to the Airlink firmware version. This procedure was done sucessfully using Windows XP, Putty and Tftp32.
Disable your anti-virus and firewall.
Download the most current version of the Airlink AR430W at www.airlink101.com and save on your desktop.
Download the Dlink DIR300 redboot at:
http://www.shadowandy.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/dir300redboot.zip
and extract to your Tftp server's directory
Set your DD-WRT - AR430W router to address 192.168.1.1
Connect the Cat5 cable from your computer to any LAN port on the AR430W
Set your NIC to 192.168.1.23/255.255.255.0
Start Putty using 192.168.1.1, but do not press the OPEN yet
With the dir300redboot.rom file in the tftp32 program directory, start tftp32 using port 9000 at 192.168.1.23
Start a command window and run ping 192.168.1.1 -t
Plug the power to the AR430w
As soon as you see the ping window get a ping response, press the OPEN button in the Putty window and as soon as you see anything in the new black Putty session window, press Ctrl+C to get the DD-WRT> prompt.
Then do the following
DD-WRT> fconfig -i

Hit enter to accept the defaults and finally save the config to non volatile storage.
DD-WRT> ip_address -h 192.168.1.23
Default server: 192.168.1.2
DD-WRT> fconfig bootp false
DD-WRT> fis init

*** Initialize FLASH Image System
… Erase from 0xbffe0000-0xbfff0000: .
… Program from 0×80ff0000-0×81000000 at 0xbffe0000: .

DD-WRT> reset
The router should reboot at this point of time.
Preparing your system router recovery
Download the Airlink latest firmware for the AR430W from www.airlink101.com
Connect the network cable to your ethernet port and the WAN port of AR430W.
Configure your System IP address (static) to be 192.168.20.80/255.255.255.0.
Remove the power from AR430W
Getting into Emergency Recovery Page
Ensure that the AR430W is not powered on
Hold on to the reset button and power AR430Won
Hold on to the reset button for about 30 seconds while AR430W is booting , keep holding it and
Open up your web browser and go to http://192.168.20.81. You should be able to see the emergency recovery page.
Uploading the original Airlink AR430Wfirmware
Click on the browse button and locate the firmware you have downloaded from Airlink firmware page earlier
Click on the upload button to start flashing the device. Follow the instruction on screen as seen in the image below. When it is done, reset the device by power cycling it. It will be running the Airlink firmware after rebooting (power cycling) and can be connected thru your browser at 192.168.1.1. Username= admin Password = admin
Be sure to reset you network adapter's address to 192.168.1.2 / 255.255.255.0 to connect to the AR430W at 192.168.1.1
You should now be in the Airlink's original firmware - enjoy.
