Hi,

I'm a bit confused which firmware to use. I want to use my E2500 v3 as VPN router, Wifi is not required.
I want to flash via the linksys gui.

Thanks

Hi,

I´m a newbie and I just bought a E2500 v3. I´ve followed the information in this thread and flashed it with dd-wrt.v24-23569_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e2500V3.bin. It´s working fine.

I would like to upgrade to a version with openVPN but I´m not sure which version I should get.

Could someone post a link for me please?

UPDATE: nevermind I used dd-wrt.v24-26947_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e2500.bin

Which build will take care of the Comcast DSCP bug without having to manually put in commands?

I have the e2500v3 with v24-sp2 (05/06/15) mega - build 26839M.

Did the k3x builds fix the Comcast DSCP bug? Thanks.

It turns out that upgrading to a K3.x build for e2500v3
fixed the Comcast DSCP bug without having to use a script. I've had build 25974 mega e2500 running smoothly for about 2 hours now.

I have the E2500V3 and flashed Fractals firmware, but now am confused about which upgrade to get. I want a mega build for Repeater and VPN usage. However the wiki said to only use nv60k builds which fall under Broadcom K26, but people are talking about K3x builds which don't have an nv60k downloads...

If I look at the latest beta FTP directory. Am i supposed to get a K26 Nv60k, a k26 e2500, or a k3x e2500 build? The information is conflicting.

I was having the same question as HoLLo - what to use, based on all the differing info. However my router is only 2 days old, I can return it if I bricked it (and I had a standby option so I wouldn't be offline).

So, with a brand new router, I flashed:
dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e2500.bin (from the router database page)

Then, applied the mega:
dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv60k.bin (from the router database page)

However the OpenVPN client (which is the whole reason I was doing this to begin with) didn't work properly... did some research, found this thread and went for it - so as per recommended a few posts up:
http://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2015/05-19-2015-r26947/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-26947_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e2500.bin (from the dd-wrt beta downloads)

I'm pleased to say everything works perfectly - well, the features I've tried anyway. The OpenVPN client works and the router seems to be running well. Occasionally the CSS doesn't load properly but a simple page refresh resolves that, no big deal.

So to any newbies/other people wondering what to do, hope this helps. Just to be sure, this is a Linksys E2500 REV 3 router purchased 9/22/2015.

Thanks for the posts. My knowlege of networking is limited to one hour of wathing Eli the computer guy on Youtube so this thread was really helpful to me.

So I followed everything in this thread and I'm very pleased with the results. I ordered the E2500 v3 from Amazon for cheap thinking it was version 1 or 2 since the image shown on the website didn't have a USB port. When the router arrived today, I hesitated to flash Fractal's v3 build since it was described as highly experimental and I feared bricking the unit. But I hate returning merchandises so I went for it after reading philr5150's post above. For those on the lookout and you happen to chance upon this thread like I did, I'm re-listing the links here of the exact builds I used for your convenience.

mini: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=30086&sid=c045405ca9ee2f47797f1491fb5255ce

mega: http://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2015/05-19-2015-r26947/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-26947_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e2500.bin

Note that the wireless speed was abysmal at first but this was resolved by, again searching the forum and following numerous advise. However, I believe only one solution made the difference: disabling the WMM support found under Wireless tab/Advanced Settings.

Going a bit off topic here, the reason I got into DD-WRT was I wanted to enforce google safe search on my home network. After spending some time playing with squid proxy and applying url_redirect_program to append safe=strict on google URL, it convinced me that that won't work with SSL. Searching for options Google led me to using DNSMasq on the router. The cheapest way to get that functionality is by flashing DD-WRT on an inexpensive router. So here's what I did to keep my home network safe from explicit materials (it's not foolproof but better than nothing for my kids):

Use OpenDNS: include blocking of all search engines except google by whitelisting it.
In Router DNSMasq, enter lines for google (point to google safesearch IP address)

address=/google.com/216.239.38.120
.
.
.
plus about 200 variations (countries) eg, google.ca, google.fr, etc pointed to the same IP address

This seems to work for now. I'm expecting some side effects real soon and probably a yell from the wife for not receiving yahoo emails. If you happen to have a suggestion or any thing to watch out for, I'd appreciate the advise.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Just picked up a V3 Linksys E2500. My V2 E2500 I've been using for a few months died on me (seems to be a component problem for power but haven't had the chance to diagnose...all the lights just stay very dim and constantly on with no ping response at all and no luck with hard reset).

From everything I've read it seems the current "most stable" mega version for OpenVPN functioning correctly should be dd-wrt.v24-26947_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e2500. Is this correct still?

Also it seems that upgrading from stock should be dd-wrt.v24-23569_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e2500V3?

Thanks and hello! I've been using DD-WRT for a while but hadn't needed to use the forum yet. But the reading for the V3 E2500 is a bit intimidating since it's still listed on the WIKI as highly experimental.

Well I decided to dive in and this is the procedure I used (I figure the more verification posted the better since these V3 routers are beginning to be the only ones on shelves in the E2500 series):

power on
unplug ethernet
30-30-30
wait 30 sec. more after power light stops flashing
plug ethernet
log in for flash
flash dd-wrt.v24-23569_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e2500V3.bin
wait 60 sec.
check web gui while waiting 60
unplug ethernet
30-30-30
wait 30 sec. more
plug ethernet
log in for flash
check wifi SSID broadcast with android wifi analyzer (NO SSID FROM ROUTER but all settings appear correct under basic and advanced wifi)
flash dd-wrt.v24-26947_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e2500.bin (choose to reset to default settings after flash)
watch countdown timer on gui. power lights flash about 7 sets of 3 flashes then router resets.
power light flashes and router resets again.
wifi appears shortly after on wifi analyzer. no more power light flash.
wait for gui to appear
wait 30 sec more.
unplug ethernet
30-30-30
waited 30 more sec.
but power led flashed twice at 30
wait another 30 sec.
check wifi SSID broadcast
plug ethernet
check gui
changed password and logged in and all appears good!

Update:

After initial setup of Repeater-Bridge:
Virtual interface would not stay on same channel as main router
set Physical Interface back to AP and changed channel to match main router AP
(originally had set to Auto because my main router will not let me set a specific channel in 20/40 auto mode)
(Main router is a WRT110 unsupported by DD-WRT and I can't set the subnet mask to what I require with stock firmware)
Saved
set Physical Interface back to Repeater-Bridge
Saved and Applied
Virtual interface came up as CM_TEST_SSID but stayed on same channel as main router AP!
checked Virtual interface and it was not changed from the name I gave it!
saved and applied again
still comes up as CM_TEST_SSID but listed correctly in setup

powered down for 20 seconds
plugged in and Virtual interface SSID came back up correctly and on correct channel

access to LAN and Internet! Success!

next will configure OpenVPN and check back with update...

Well I still haven't had the time to try OpenVPN because I'm having speed issues on the LAN side when using client-bridge as described here > http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=992526#992526

Mine is running great after trial and error when I finally put Tomato on it. See this thread:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=992526#992526

I haven't had time to go back to DD-WRT on it after finishing up the tomato install to figure out the download speed problem with client bridge and repeater bridge.

Dear All,

Just wanted to add another entry to the success story of this thread.

Used the following two files, doing a 30-30-30 reset before and after each flashing:

1. dd-wrt.v24-23569_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e2500V3.bin
2. dd-wrt.v24-26947_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-e2500.bin

Thanks to Fractal and all those who made this possible!
