I have read posts, the wiki for the E3000, searched th forum finding information from all dates, and the Peacock thread and am still unusre of my next steps.

I have successfully installed and have an operational E3000 using the Peacock Thread instructions to flash the Trailed build 14929 and my router status page says my current firmware is:
"DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/12/10) std-usb-ftp - build 14929"

All is working well. Now I want to upgrade the firmware to utilize OpenVPN and am unsure how to do this. It seems to me 14929 is the latest and greatest firmware meaning it is the most stable. Others have recommended firmware versions, but it is hard to tell if those recommendations are outdated.

What is the next step to add OpenVPN support, what firmware do I use, where do I find this firmware on the dd-wrt website, and what instructions should I use, the Peacock Thread or others?

I am really not sure where to find the correct firmware since the download section doesn't spell out a big, mega, of giga build for an e2k-e3k or e3000 router and only shows mini builds which confuse me and not sure if that is stepping backward sor forwards to flash those.

Will I be giving up stability or adding any issues with updates past 14929?

I don't want to push my luck and screw up something that seems to be working well.

Well, the big build for an E3000 is ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-e2k-e3k.bin

You may flash it after you flashed the initial DD-WRT version, read the wiki for instructions.

Some say build 15962 is most stable for it, others swear by build 16785. Personally I use the Kong 19277M. Some say that Kong 18730M does better VPN than 19277M.

I have already installed DD-WRT to 14929 using the trailed build from the wiki, so based on that and reading the wiki further, I should be good to flash to dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-e2k-e3k.bin. Is this a correct statement and will this flash add the OpenVPN support?

The other two builds, 15962 and 16785 you mentioned. What would I need those for if OpenVPN is in the big build listed above?

According to http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/What_is_DD-WRT%3F#K2.6_Build_Features the builds big and mega have OpenVPN. So, yes, you would have to flash the file you mentioned. The mega build also has VPNC.

Hi,

Once you go to the later firmware builds, you need to use files ending in nv60k for the E3000.

Build 15962 Mega is the version I use in production on E3000s and it works all day every day.

The later builds we are currently testing, but definatly 14929 is not ideal for OpenVPN as its a bit of a pain to set up. Not all the options are there that you need.

Newer > 19000 builds have had some SSL issues, check the threads for details.

Good luck and report back

Cheers

MrFidget,

Given you experience with the E3000, I am inclined to flash the 15962 Mega build.

Can I flash this directly from my current version, 14929 trailed, or is there another step I must take first?

I also must be missing something in finding the correct firmware download. Going to ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/12-24-10-r15962/broadcom_K26/ shows a huge list, none of which are MEGA or nv60k.

Where and how do you know which to download?

Thats the one I use Smile VLANs do NOT work from the GUI, you need to set them in NVRAM manually

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24-K26/svn18946/dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv60k.bin

Works ok but there are some NVRAM overwrite issues. Read the thread. Been using this version on some E3200s. Set up and play, but you need to 30-30-30 or restore a basic setup from file as some setting are sticky

Newer ones are fun to play with, if you can justify it. I have a lot with customers so I guess I can justify the time.
