I've just joined this forum, so I'll say hello to everyone.

This thread has been very interesting to read, as I have recently purchased a Netgear WNDR 3700 router with DD-WRT firmware: version 3.0-r30949 installed. Build No. 30949

Although it looks like I might have made a mistake, I have just started a 2 year contract with NordVPN.
I only started it on October 1st, so I do still have time to cancel and go with another VPN provider if necessary.

The problem I'm facing is that I want to use the VPN router when I'm away for long spells, so I can watch BBC iPLayer via TV and a Roku 3 streaming box.
As expected, the VPN router wouldn't allow me to start streaming BBC, so I started many hours of 'live help' via the NordVPN technical live link.

The basic outcome seems to be that I need to utilise the custom firmware 'OpenVpn' and have read and re-read their link: https://nordvpn.com/tutorials/dd-wrt/openvpn-gui/ for way too much time.

This is how I ended up reading this forum.
I followed the Open vpn guide to the letter, plus followed wajirah's advice, regarding his alternative settings.

But still nothing ...... Evil or Very Mad

Originally the VPN router came with the UK31Nordvpn server loaded, but I thought I'd be clever and try a higher numbered server (UK120) together with the correct settings and tls and ca certificate files

But still nothing .......

Any suggestions anyone?
Many thanks

I think every Nord server has its own certificates so if you change servers you have to change certificates.

Can you connect succesfully? (check with https://www.ipleak.net/) but is it the fact that BBC is not working? If so be sure to use in private browsing or clear all cache/cookies

I use Private internet acces as VPN, their IP addresses are banned by the BBC, I was told that the same holds true for IPVanish. They rotate their IP addresses so I hope it starts working again in the near future

Thanks for the quick reply ......
Yes; I did load the correct certificates for the UK120 server I used, but still no luck.

I know the BBC is working fine with NordVPN at the moment, as I have NordVPN loaded on my laptop and desktop and they stream BBC iPlayer [usually 9 times out of 10] with not too many problems.
Of course, with the PC version of NordVPN, it's a dynamic server selection, so simple to cut one connection and simply load another.
With the VPN router, as we know, it's not that simple.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that openvpn doesn't want to work on my router, or I've loaded a wrong value somewhere ........ But I followed the instructions to the letter.

Edit ..... I'm now watching BBC iPlayer via NordVPN server No. 51 on the laptop and on server No. 71 on the desktop.
So it is possible to stream via NordVPM, just not through the VPN router.

OK so you can not connect. What is the Log showing (Satus/OpenVPN)?
You can post a picture

Sorry, but I've just disconnected everything and put it away, as I was using the laptop to connect to the VPN router and the desktop to work via the internet; so I can type now.

All I can remember when I finished the supposed Openvpn configuration this morning and checked the 'Status/Openvpn' all the boxes were completely empty.
Nothing connected, or any sign of internet activity at all.

If all the boxes are empty it is probably a certificate problem Sad

So check that you have the right certificates in the right boxes all should start with
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----
end end with
-----END CERTIFICATE-----

If you used a windows editor to copy then there could be wrong characters in the certificate. You can use Notepad or Notepad ++

I think we're at cross purposes here ......

All the certificates were correct. I double checked the beginning and at the end of both the tls and ca certificates.
I also used Notepad for my editing (copy & paste) to move the certificates into their correct locations.

As I mentioned above, I followed the https://nordvpn.com/tutorials/dd-wrt/openvpn-gui/ guide to the letter.

Regarding the Satus/OpenVPN, I didn't get the message "Client: CONNECTED SUCCESS."
This is the final instruction of the 'Openvpn tutorial guide'.
Take a look at the tutorial link and you will see what I mean.
It was all those boxes which were empty, not the certificate boxes.

I think I'll probably have to go to the NordVPN live help link and see if someone from their technical team can walk me through the process.
It wouldn't surprise me if there were some changes to the Openvpn tutorial, that haven't yet been edited into the tutorial, especially as later firmware versions are now in use.

Same issue Tony, I hope someone can help, rather frustrating. If I manage to get a solution, I will post an idiot's guide with pictures, but so far, no luck.

Do you have the same router and want to watch BBC iPlayer in a forgein country?

For me, the dd-wrt openvpn tutorial just doesn't work with my VPN router and current firmware!!

Hopefully [fingers and everything else crossed) I should have some answers today, maybe even a solution.

More later .........

I'm not trying to watch the BBC in a foreign country, as I am in the UK. I have netgear r7000 with dd-wrt, however, even after following the guides I still can't connect, no IP address, nothing, and I'm not a novice to IT, so will try to give it another shot tonight and update you.

I'm sure that if I could get it to connect, then if I wanted to watch the BBC in a foreign country it would be possible, but at the moment, I cannot even get any connection. grrr!!

Good luck!

Blumin' typical ......

There's no 'live router technical support' available at the moment. Maybe later today or even tomorrow.
They've suggested I contact the router technical department directly; I've been doing this for the last 5 days and it's impossible to work via e-mails, especially when questions and answers are at least 12 hours apart from each other!!

** Question **
Is there another VPN provider who has multiple UK servers available and are compatible with DD-WRT firmware.
Also who have 'dynamic server selection' for routers, as per PC's, who select the best suitable server, not this archaic manual input method.

I'm going to try the dd-wrt Openvpn tutorial installation once more, then send sreenshots to the technical department and see what they make of it.

That really sucks. I MIGHT have found my issue.
Some sites claim that it's not possible to have OpenVPN and PPPoE connection on the same router. My ISP provider requires PPPoE login/password, and this works when I don't try to enable/install OpenVPN. I have a draytek vigor 130 modem connected to the router, so I will try to put the PPPoE settings of the ISP in the modem instead of the router, and install the OpenVPN on the DD-WRT router once again as per NordVPN instructions, and see if that changes things.....when I get back from work. will update when i try!

good luck.

there are loads of VPN's, not sure of the amount of UK servers each, but here is a link, just check them one by one to see how good they are/not.

Thanks for the update and possible solution.

As expected, I've set-up as per the DD-WRT Open vpn instructions and of course ....... Nothing.
Screen shots have been taken of several pages of the set up after changes were made, then e-mailed to the helpline.

Lets see what they make of it ........

The only thing that might snooker me, is that when abroad, I will be at the mercy of any router that I plug into.
In my little world, I expected to connect the VPN router to the property owner's router, then connect my Roku 3 streaming box and 'Bob's yer Uncle' ...... All UK TV stations available.

Had that same issue when I was living in Brazil and Norway, trying to accomplish the same thing for watching home TV. I feel your pain!
