Is it dead?

Symptoms:

1. Jtag works, I can read and write. Data written is consistent with what is read back. In this way, erased wholeflash, and wrote an appropriate CFE.

2. Serial ports do not work. Tested with logic analyzer, all I see is the signal going from lo->hi and staying hi when powered on. No other data is seen.

3. Ping does not work, neither does tftp.

3. 3.3v power is fine, as checked across JTAG pins

4. 12v power is fine as checked near the 12v plug-in.

5. Upon power-on power led flashes, then all ports light up once. Power led continues to flash indefinitely.

6. I replaced the electrolytic caps near the 12v plug, it did not help.

Is there anything else that can be checked on the pcb to diagnose this thing?

Sounds like cfe is not right. But a 54g is not worth any effort.

i think the CPU might be burned out. It does not enter debug mode when jtag-ing, and it seems that it fails to jump to the CFE code.

If you really want to stick with the WRT54G, go buy one for $10 on Craigslist... people are trying to get rid of them like crazy, which is fine. I just don't have the heart to get rid of those two powerful boxes I have....

heh, one step ahead - i hunted one down on ebay. And while there are certainly lots of sellers there are also plenty of buyers Shocked I figured I'd just buy a cheap one and be done with it, but no! Got sniped once, a couple more went for more than I was willing to pay.. So yeah, wrt54g is alive and well!

While I have accepted the death of my wrt54g, there is still one question I want an answer to:

If the cpu is dead, how can jtag work still be possible?

I had the flashing power light as a symptom of not properly editing a CFE with the appropriate mac addresses. Double check your mac addresses and try to reflash the CFE.
