Hi all,
I'm currently happy with my Linksys E4200.
It is working fine, and to be honest, there is no real need to get it replaced.
But I had some issues in the past because of the low memory.
So I was wondering if anyone has any thought about a high-class replacement for such router.
It should have enough internal memory to hold a mega image, and still be able to keep ipkg and stuff.
And of course, it should be fully supported by DD-WRT.
I used a 4200 for years until it began to struggle with bandwidth increases and additional software.
I personally would rather spend a little extra up front on a device that is not going to raise my aggravation/irritation levels with marginal peformance and annoying update requirements.
Reading the forum threads brought me to Kong and his development on the Netgear R7000. Kong has added update provisions to the firmware which make this unit a pleasure to work with. With the addition of an ext3 formatted usb stick automounted to /opt (forget jffs)
and the bootstrap command, the unit is ready for newly updated opkg builds and what ever other software you want to add. In my case it is Yamon2 and backup scripts.
His ddup command makes firmware changes painless.
I copy firmware updates to /opt and use the local calls in ddup to install it. Takes about 10 seconds and the router is rebooting.
I also added an external connector to the serial port and attached it to a ttl level terminal server module so I can connect to it from anywhere in my system.
All in all I am very pleased with the R7000 and Kong's
work on it.
