VPN help

So I have a PPTP VPN set up, I have no problems connecting, although periodically (every few days) the VPN disconnects and reconnects.

My VPN server is out of the country.
Using a Buffalo N300 as VPN Client to connect to VPN

My problem is that when it does this my US IP address is exposed. Is there any way, a script maybe?, to prevent this?

Is OpenVPN more stable? if so can anyone point me to a good tutorial to set up a DD-WRT router as a OpenVPN server.
