I am trying to do serial recovery now, but how do I open it? I see no screws. Do I pop the hood? I don't wanna break my router.
Hi, you can find screws under rubber stands. They are glued so you will need some force to remove them. There are 4 screws and then you can remove top cover.
To remove router board you will need to remove one screw in the middle of the board.
Ok I have opened up the router and have the serial connector. I also ordered a soldering kit, but what pins do I need to solder in?
Can anyone link me to one on amazon? Are they called pin headers? I don't want to order wrong ones.
Search for "pin headers" in electronics on Amazon. 2.54mm. Get some extra just in case. They are inexpensive. You need to solder 3. You don't need to connect to power, only gnd, rx and tx. Pages 9 and 10 of this thread are your friend. Watch a video or two on how to solder on YouTube before jumping in. You don't want to hold the solder iron to the serial port too long to risk burning it. I turned the board over and soldered from the back side. Just a dab of solder is all you need.
Hi, I test the version of r31722 works OK, off and on router OK. Never upload the backup (nvrambak.bin) the previous version. The router is bricked. Repair USB serial Ctrl + c etc.

Have you enabled SSH and/or OpenVPN on the router using r31722? These services seem to be what overflows the NVRAM for most people.
Hi, I have SSH and all in VPN tab disable.
I am not a specialist in programs, but in Listing serial communication errors and nonexistent directory. Unfortunately, I do not understand.
Router with version r31722 works OK. Several times I turned it off and turned the system and always ran.
Unfortunately, even r31722 version does not work well. After 24 hours done off and on. The router is bricked. Performing a recovery on your version of r30432. Version r30432 is stable and my need to be fully functional.
Unfortunately I updated my firmware today without reading thru forum and now my 880L is bricked and won't recover even with D-Link recovery tool. Is the only way to recover router to open up and connect via serial port? Any instructions on this process. Ugh.

Trying to get a handle on the latest known-good firmware I can install on a dir880L without bricking. Here's a partial compilation, from this thread. If you have more data, please reply!
r29396 = OK (from ridilen)
r30432 = OK (on v1 hardware. From MoreCowbell & slimbig)
r30826 = BRICKED (from slimbig)
r30949 = BRICKED (from yasfinite)
r31520 = BRICKED (from Xentrk)
r31690 = BRICKED (from Pisi)
r31722 = BRICKED (from Pisi)
Loaded 03-30-2017-r31791 and router booted up normally. Unplugged router and upon putting back in its old location, orange blinking light = bricked. Can't find my USB to TTL RS232 cable so have to order a new one but I did solder in pins for later.
Found cable, loaded putty and issued nvram erase. Rebooted router and it came back with r31791. Not wanting to relive this waste of time, I loaded r30432 and I have been able to complete power cycle a few times without issue. Many thanks to those who already went thru this process and the info provided on pages 9-11 of this thread.
Having fully recovered now I'm a bit curious as what is causing issue. Has anyone successfully ran any of the newer builds on a DIR-880L and has anyone looked into the cause? Putting an asterisk or alert next to the download link might save someone else from unnecessary agony.

The NVRAM soft-brick issue affects both the D-LINK DIR-880L and the DIR-868L. There are multiple reports of routers being bricked in the "New build" threads. There is a "Bricked DIR-880L" thread on the front page of this forum currently.
The issue has been described multiple times in the respective router's threads, with a fair bit of discussion on what causes it. It has also been reported multiple times via the SVN:
And yet there has been no response whatsoever from the devs. I understand if the devs do not have the bandwidth to fix this bug or if they don't care about these devices, but leaving device-bricking builds up for anyone to flash, with no warning, for months on end, is just a bit crappy. It's not like there are only a couple of users affected either – I've seen multiple new users come here only to fuck up their routers to a point where they need to be taken apart to fix.
From reading prior threads I picked up the more recent builds have also been an issue for 868L which is unfortunate. Yesterday loaded Kong dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin build DD-WRT v3.0-r31575M kongac (03/21/17) which worked for about a day and now it has bricked as well. Looks like its back to r30432. Such as shame that these routers are no longer supported.
