Do ANY routers support the 4G UML295?

Looking for any router (not cradlepoint) that supports the Uml295 either out of the box or with an open even commercial version of dd-wrt. Builds I have used with the Uml290 do not work with the 295.

If it works out of the box in Cradlepoint then it may be your only option.

UML295 is currently not supported in any dd-wrt version and there is no plan to include it in a near future.
Support for this kind of device which isn't a 3G dialup modem but a 3G direct ethernet adapter is difficult in a router - this is a typical desktop device needing either the mfgrs original connection manager or access to dongles internal webserver pages.
There is no consistent usage of webserver url's between mfgrs of this kind of device, some of the pages/url's are even hidden or "secret".

I found this thread from google searching for routers that support UML295... I currently have a UML295 plugged into a Cradlepoint MBR95. I bought a Netgear AC1450 (same hardware as R6300v2) and figured it could plug it to the cradlepoint with IP passthrough and move on with my life...

Turns out that the cradlepoint doesn't have IP passthrough! >.< Their cheapest model with that feature is like $300 and i can't see myself paying $300 for an intermediate device that does nothing but basically interfaces my USB modem to my network. Peplink, the second most popular 3G/4G router company, has a model that does IP passthrough for ONLY $499!

I will check out that router you linked because the specs do say it supports IP passthrough. Quite a shabby website with very poor grammar/spelling though.

Also, you may find this interesting.

I would really love it if i could just simply plug the UML295 directly to the Netgear with DD-WRT and live happily ever after...[/url]

That's what you get when a Chinese company opens a website for peddling their goods onto the US/CA market. Wink
There is no company address or company registration info, no "About us", just a toll free number which most
likely is routed to China.
No support page for download of updated firmware, no GPL source code offer which is a breach of the Linux license.
The Mifi is, from what I've been told, not FCC approved.

The origin of this construction is AMIT Taiwan who sells it under their own brand name Zalip and they also
manufacture it for TrendNet, D-Link, Zoom, and Aluratek, companies who do customer support and who also have an
FCC approval for their model names.
It is a standard RaLink RT3050/52 construction combined with a good 3G support firmware written by AMIT.

The modem support list from Mofi is the same as for the known-brand versions, even spelling mistakes and
Chinese translation errors match..

So based on this I would rather buy a D-Link DWR-116 or DIR-510L than the Mofi.

It may be possibble but you'll have to do it manually without dd-wrt gui support, I think the cdc_ether driver is included in the dd-wrt build
for AC1450.

try:

modprobe usbnet
modprobe cdc_ether

and check in dmesg if you get a new wan device.

LOM, I have the UML295 connected and it shows up but, of course it gives the "This device cannot do calls on its own. It is not a modem." error.

Do I have a shot at getting it to work if I follow the directions here?

Ok, I've been at this all day... I don't seem to have modprobe. There is a modprobe file in proc/sys/kernel but it's 0 bytes. Anyway...

The uml295 shows up as a pantech cd rom but also registers with cdc_ether as seen below...

The modem is powered up and connected (solid green light) as the dialer/info is stored locally on the uml295 itself. I've tried with WAN settings on DHCP, iphone, and mobile broadband. As well as setting wan tags to ppp0 & eth3 (in diff instances) and nothing seemed to work.

Also, i'm using Kong's latest build of v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD. Let me know if you need anymore info.

My fault, dd-wrt has not implemented modprobe - uses insmod for loading modules. Check with lsmod that both cdc_ether and usbnet are loaded, otherwise insmod missing ones.

Your dmesg log shows a new device being created:

cdc_ether 1-2:1.0 eth3: register 'cdc_ether' at usb-0000:00:0a.1-2, CDC Ethernet
Device, d0:57:85:fe:c0:54

so check with ifconfig that it is listed there.
If it isn't "up and running" then:
ifconfig eth3 up

I don't know if ULM295 will give a fixed ip address on the eth3 device or if you have to pull one using dhcp but ifconfig will show you if that is needed.

Set it to Disabled while you are doing manual test.
Mobile Broadband is wrong in any case since UML295 is an ethernet adapter and is not handled as a dialup modem. IPhone tether is also wrong.

I had to force eth3 up. There's no IP assigned to it...

ok, so now with eth3 being up and WAN selection in the gui as "Disabled" then what happens if you do:

udhcpc -i eth3

does ifconfig show an ip address for eth3 now?

nvram set wan_ifname2 = eth3
nvram commit
reboot

After booting change WAN selection in the gui to "DHCP automatic configuration" and you should get connected.

Thanks. Now, i notice when i've rebooted in the past that cdc_ether and usbnet were no longer loaded. Is there an insmod switch to load them automatically or do i have to create a script? nvram commit after loading them?

Yes it is possible to add the cmds into a startup script but that comes later, there's no use in making a script before you have confirmed that the cmds work when entered manually.

So, did you get an ip address when doing udhcpc -i eth3 ?
