Hey guys,
I flashed my Asus RT-N66U with the recommended build from the dd-wrt page. Internet and ethernet is working, but I can't access the control panel at the router IP.
..but they lost me pretty fast. I'm rather new at using dd-wrt and it's a long time since I last used it. It is also the first time I've encountered a problem like this.
I would really appreciate it if someone would give me some specific instructions.
From what I've gathered so far I need to do one of the following:
1. Flash it to factory settings.
2. Flash it to v24-23919_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U instead.
3? Make it work with the current build.
Please help.
**UPDATE**
I downloaded the tftp2.exe gui version. I have the build I want to flash to, but I'm not entirely sure about the IP of the router.
Normally it would default to 192.168.1.1, but the router IP seems to be 100.72.0.1 and DHCP(which also works) gave me 100.72.67.63
I have also tried the Asus firmware restoration tool, but it doesn't even detect that the router is there.

Don't have it plugged into the modem. Just the pc to the router. Set your pc to 192.168.1.9, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.1.1.
Hold the rest button in as you power on the router, when the power light flashes, use the asus firmware restoration tool to flash RMerlin fw.
After you have RMerlin on it, check the bootloader. If it's 1.0.1.3 or above you need to use the K3.X builds. The K2.6 builds are for the 32k nvram version. _________________ I am far from a guru, I'm barely a novice.
I got RMerlin RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_376.47_0, changed the IP, used the tool with the firmware with a disconnected modem, while powering the router on and holding reset. It didn't work. I got an "Invalid IP address" error at first and then "The wireless router is not in rescue mode".
There's a more detailed explanation below.

I set my IP to:
192.168.1.9
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
I unplugged the modem.
I've downloaded "RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_376.47_0" from RMerlin's mediafire account. There were a ton of versions, but it was the newest in the "all models" folder. This link will redirect you there if you wanna make sure I picked the right one: http://www.lostrealm.ca/asuswrt-merlin/download
I started up "rescue.exe" in the Asus restoration tool package, found the *.trx file and got ready to press upload.
I turned on the router while holding the reset button.
When all the buttons lit up I started pressing upload, but got the message "Invalid IP address". Possibly because it wasn't ready yet, but I don't know.
I kept pressing upload and holding reset and about 5 seconds after the buttons had stopped flashing it started to connect. After 20 seconds or so I got the message "The wireless router is not in rescue mode"

Sounds right. I don't know why it's not working.
If you are in the USA and are willing to pay for two way shipping, I can try. I also have serial adapter, so I can try that way too. _________________ I am far from a guru, I'm barely a novice.
I don't know. This should not be this complicated.
I have some new info. Apparently my wireless is showing up with the name "01830184". It is encrypted with WPA2 PSK.
When I go to 192.168.1.1 it says the following:
"Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh.
Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-N66U.
To access the settings of RT-N66U, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number."
EDIT: This was an asus message only related to the flashing process, after clearing browser data it is gone.
How do I find out what that IP and port is? I've got this, but all the confusion about the non-standard IP's has made me in doubt:
IPv4-address: 100.72.92.114
IPv4-subnet: 255.255.128.0
IPv4-standardgateway: 100.72.0.1
IPv4-DHCP-server: 178.132.230.5
IPv4-DNS-servere: 178.132.239.37, 95.154.58.176
Hope you still want to help

Sounds like it is running some non-default configuration...
Are you sure dd-wrt is on there, or if the router was not configured by a "friendly" neighbour to some weird config?
How about holding the reset butten for over ten seconds to reset it to factory defaults?

No-one else had access to my router, unless they bothered to crack a 26 digit WPA2 encryption in the same moment I started to flash to the firmware in the title. The only 2 things active on the list of wireless units was my printer and phone.
The non-default deal is what is really bothering me as well. 192.168.1.1 is standard for ASUS as well as dd-wrt and I haven't changed it manually.
The message I wrote in my previous comment: "Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh.

I found out that it is an asus message that can be viewed offline. After clearing offline cache for the address it is gone.
I have tried holding reset. It doesn't seem to do anything.
