SUCCESS!! DD-WRT v3.0-r27506(07/09/15) is loaded and running.
1. Successful web loading of CeroWRT image
2. Interrupt U-Boot on the serial console and set board model ID using board_model_id_set WNDR3800
3. Web load Netgear v1.0.0.16
4. Web load wndr3800-factory.img
Thank you Kryptex for responding and pointing out the CeroWRT web page. I really appreciate your help and guidance in getting this WNDR3800CH (now WNDR3800!) router loaded with DD-WRT. _________________ 2x Asus RT-AC68U
I suspect the CeroWRT load may have been unnecessary. But it's good to know there's a firmware image available that WILL successfully webflash to the WNDR3800CH. Not everyone will want to connect to the console serial port, either. But if you have a WNDR3800CH, and you can interrupt the U-Boot start sequence, DD-WRT is completely possible on this router. _________________ 2x Asus RT-AC68U

There are some great posts in this thread about what to do about flashing the WNDR3800CH from OEM firmware V1.0.0.57CH to DD-WRT firmware; however every link seems to loop back to the same posts, with no current indication of where the file is actually located. Can someone help me out in finding the correct file that will flash directly, or even flash to the CeroWRT image that used to be located at snapon.lab.bufferbloat.net? - http://snapon.lab.bufferbloat.net/~cero2/test-wndr3800ch/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-wndr3800ch-squashfs-factory.img
I am new at this and trying to get clear about what is the best file to use to convert the router in the first place.
Thanks!
Michael
EDIT: Sorry--photos and not all links were appearing until after I posted. Bottom of my router has exactly the same markings as one in KeithB's photos. Also, I now see a "factory image" linked in Keith's post. Does this link to the initial DD-WRT image I will need to use, or is that a Netgear Factory Image?

@KrypteX: Thanks much for replying. I can see now why I was having trouble finding the link when referenced in your previous posts. I remember someone noting on their posts here that you have to be signed in to download files on this site. However, I didn't realize that I would not even be able to see a link to the download file without being signed in. Many elements, like photos, didn't appear on the page until I was signed in. If there is a warning about that somewhere, I did not see it.
Also, I am on a laptop, and images are sometimes wider than my screen. Even once signed in, I had to scroll to the right to see the link. This stuff is hard enough for a newbie to figure out, without also being tripped up by the interface!
Well, thanks again, Kryptex--now I have an image to get started with. I'll post again with my result.
Netgear WNDR3800, had factory firmware, no problems. put latest dd-wrt on it (forgot version, it's gone now anyway) not happy because the DLNA nonfunctional, file sharing semi-functional, and WiFi on/off button on front of the router no longer works. decided to put back to factory firmware.
can't do that with dd-wrt installed. won't take a .img file.

just remembered it's a WNDR3800CH, so I tried using the factory Charter image from
That particular file will only flash on a regular WNDR3800 (it basically changes the vanilla Netgear WNDR3800 factory firmware to a Charter-branded firmware). However, you have a WNDR3800CH, which has a different header (board ID) than WNDR3800 and won't take the file.
I modified it with the correct Charter header, so you can TFTP the V2.1.0.59CH Charter firmware to your WNDR3800CH - use file WNDR3800CH-V2.1.0.59CH.img attached below.
I've also modified the header of the vanilla WNDR3800 factory firmware V1.0.0.16, in case you want to run it on WNDR3800CH - use file WNDR3800-V1.0.0.16_forWNDR3800CH.img

Will this work from V1.0.0.61CH firmware, or will I have to try to find V1.0.0.16CH and flash it down first?
(The label on my router says says WNDR3800-1CHNAS, just like the image in this thread)
(We really need some info on the wiki about WNDR3800 vs WNDR3800CH vs WNDR3800-with-CH-firmware, etc…I'm lost ) _________________ >tfw no DD-WRT on WNDR3800CH

I have 2 of these wndr3800ch s and I would love to get the firmware switched to ddwrt... I have gotten the openwrt flashed with the special device header version disigned for this router. But I do not care for openwrt as much as ddwrt. Any help would be appreciated

Kryptex, thank you very much for the quick response. Unfortunately the WNDR3800CH rejects the firmware file you provided.
Are you getting this kind of error ? https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=49390
You may need to flash back to an older Netgear/Charter factory firmware, if you find one. Some newer versions do not allow for 3rd party firmwares such as DD-WRT.
Which factory firmware version do you have now ? Can you find an older one, maybe the first ever version released by Netgear/Charter ?
Are you using Firefox with cache cleared ?
You might also try to TFTP the modified DD-WRT build 27506 that I provided.
If you want, I can also mod an older, small-size build 22118, that worked on a WNDRMAC (Mac version of WNDR3700).
