Last night I updated my WNDR3400 with the build recommended on the wiki (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3400#Kong_22000.2B.2B). The upgrade started then after a few seconds, the power light went to a solid amber with no ping response. I was able to get it to respond for about a second using the failsafe mode, but it didn't last enough to tftp.

It looks like my next option is either serial or jtag. Can someone point me in the right direction to get a cable? I'm going to need something with usb.

Thanks!

The link below offers another possible direction; I’ve done Pin-short a few times on my WNDR3400v1.

I did try the pin short method out of desperation, but nothing happened.

These are the steps I use to pin-short my 3400v1.

I got my file ready to tfp to the 3400v1 using tftp2.
First I start pinging the 3400v1 at 192.168.1.1
Then while pressing the reset button I plugged in the 3400v1 and kept the reset pressed in for 30 sec.
I then released the reset button, and when the first ping ttl 100 showed on my command prompt
I shorted the pins as shown on the picture attached by juanpedro012 from his post dated Apr. 19th 2012, ( thanks juanpedro012 ).

The 3400v1 started pinging TTLs.
I quickly removed the short from the pins and hit Upgrade on tftp2.
The original 3400v1 firmware was copied to the router and I waited until the lights returned to normal to reboot the 3400v1.
I next brought up Internet Explorer, entered the 3400v1 ip. address in the address bar and
SUCCESS I could login into my 3400v1 again using the default Netgear login info.

The link below is for a usb cable I ordered on ebay.
Price is not to bad and shipping was reasonably fast.

I just tried again. No luck. When your router was bricked, what color was the power light?

It's been a while since I last had to do a pin-short, but I'm sure the router lights remained orange.
The important thing is, are you able to get at least 3 ttl 100 from the router after releasing the reset button?
Timing is crucial because your window of opportunity is very small.
Make sure you're trying to tftp netgear oem firmware and not dd_wrt.

One other thing. When you apply the short, does the router respond with ttl=64?

When I hold the reset button for 30 seconds I get 3-4 ttl 100 pings and then nothing. Shorting the pins doesn't get any reaction.

This might seem like a silly question, but you're sure you have a WNDR3400v1?
The reason I ask is because Malachi is having the same issue with his WNDR3400v2.

Check out the link below, if you haven't already.

Get a USB to uart adapter. Much easier that way.

It's definitely a v1. I ordered the cable and will try fixing via serial when it arrives. Do people solder the cable directly to the board, or do they add pins to connect to?

If it's holes, I use pins. If it's pads I solder them to the board unless it's an e3000 or wrt610n.

I haven't opened the router in a few days, but i think it's pads. I'm kinda new to this, but wouldn't soldering pins on make it easier in case the router gets bricked again?

If you look closely at the picture provided by juanpedro012 in the link below,
you'll see he has labeled the jTag and serial connections.

Look closely at the picture provided by mr.secer
in the post below and you'll see exactly where you
can solder the pins, or the cables, whichever you decide.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=165019&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45

You may want to read over the 5 pages of the post in the second link
while you're waiting for the cable to arrive.

I would go with pins.

Good luck.

Malachi would be more knowledgeable about that than me.
I just read and follow the directions that folks provide and hope for the best; kinda sad on my part. Sad
