Got it connected and seems to work. But wan to wireles speed is still slow. as slow as it has been "always?".
What I mean is I can't get over 4.5Mb/s from any server online to any computer in wireless. Wan to lan speed is correct. ~9Mb/s. Is it just that this hardware is at it's limit?

Are you saying MByte/s or Mbit/s ?
Usual notations are MB = MByte and Mb = Mbit. Also 1B = 8b. _________________ THERE ARE NO STRANGERS HERE; ONLY FRIENDS YOU HAVEN'T YET MET.

MB of course. I always write it wrong
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4169986962 There is my speed result. Fail can allso be in dlink dwa-556 desktop wlan adapter. Cos' I couldn't achieve higher speeds even with new asus dls-n66u router/modem.

The max that the DIR-615D can do as a regular AP is ~70 Mbps download and ~80 Mbps upload on WiFi, and 94 Mbps down/up on LAN (tested countless times with speedtest.com).
Your 4.5 MB/s = 36 Mbps, which is about half of the 70 Mbps it can download with on WiFi. So most probably it's your WiFi adapter, so try updating the drivers for it. _________________ THERE ARE NO STRANGERS HERE; ONLY FRIENDS YOU HAVEN'T YET MET.

Drivers are unfortunately latest. Year 2009 marked are latest. Same drivers comes from windows update too.
2009 is way too old. If it's Atheros-based there are even 2014 December drivers.
Check with HWiNFO32 what is the chipset of your WiFi card and get back to me with the chipset model, I'll find you some updated driver. _________________ THERE ARE NO STRANGERS HERE; ONLY FRIENDS YOU HAVEN'T YET MET.

Atheros yes it is. But hw info doesn't say anything more about the chipset. D-link's site says that driver is 2014. But when downloaded, info file inside packet is branded to 2009 or 2008 depending of what you download. I dunno about atheros own drivers.
I don't still understand how this end drivers can affect network speed from outside when inside speed is ok?
I told you: give me the exact WiFi card's Atheros chipset model and I'll give you a driver dated 2014.
If you don't want it, fine by me.
If you want it, go to http://www.hwinfo.com/download.php and download in the lower left corner "download portable" . Start the HWiNFO32 program and go to Network and please tell me the Wireless card's detailed model (should be something like Atheros AR9285 or whatever it is). I hope you manage to do that. _________________ THERE ARE NO STRANGERS HERE; ONLY FRIENDS YOU HAVEN'T YET MET.

Just noticed your post while typing this. 10.0.0.297 is old, not so good, has disconnect issues... so don't install it.
Your card has an Atheros AR5xxx series chip, with IDs:
VEN_168C, DEV_0024, SUBSYS_3A701186
Here's the latest driver 10.0.0.308 for AR5xxx/AR9xxx series from November or December 2014 (depends on OS) for Windows 8.1/8/7/XP:
download.drp.su/drivernews/WLAN_Atheros_10.0.0.308.7z
It contains the driver for:
%ATHR.DeviceDesc.DWA556% = ATHR_DEV_OS61_3A701186.ndi, PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0024&SUBSYS_3A701186
which is
"D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme N PCIe Desktop Adapter"
First uninstall the official (very old !) driver from D-Link that you already have.
Restart PC.
Unpack the WLAN_Atheros_10.0.0.308.7z package that I linked to and run setup.exe, should install without issues.
I'm using this same driver on my Atheros AR9285 and I've been hunting for updated versions for some time now... On Windows 7 will install driver version 10.0.0.303 from 24 Nov 2014 and works much better than previous driver I had, 10.0.0.299 from September 2014. _________________ THERE ARE NO STRANGERS HERE; ONLY FRIENDS YOU HAVEN'T YET MET.
