Posted: Mon Jun 15, 2015 2:08 Post subject: Quick heatsinking of Broadcom chip in WRT54G V8.2
Did a quick heatsinking of a rather hot Broadcom chip in this router. Used some heat sink goosegrease coumpound, and to help hold the heatsink in position, used some hot melt glue applied to the edges and contacting the circuit board. Crude, simple, but it seems to work. And if the chip got so hot that it melts the glue, it probably would have died before I did this anyway.
I have also used hot glue and it works wonders in terms of time and simplicity. From wiki, hot glue is said to melt around 120 C, which is clearly sufficient. Slight precaution: I once carelessly added a large amount of steaming hot glue to a board in order to set wires I soldered in and quickly lost functionality. I believe failure was most likely due to the heat exposure on surrounding small components like BJTs et. al.
I've used superglue at the ends of a tim covered heatsink as you guys used hot glue, and ceramic tim material to permanently apply a relatively huge cpu heatsink to a vid card gpu. Works a treat.
