ASUS RT-N66U and Airport Extreme

Howdy folks. I'm new here and would like a little or lot of help with getting my routers to talk to each other.

Here is where I'm at so far:
Asus RT-N66U Router is what I want to be hooked up directly to the Cable modem using LAN only and the Airport Extreme will be hardwired in the center of my house which will serve as my wifi router.
I have flashed the ASUS with dd-wrt.v24-27456_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N66U.trx and followed the webpage for Privateinternetaccess to get it set up via OPENVPN on the router. I think I'm okay on that front..

How do i get the 2 routers talking to each other when their IP's are completely different. ASUS is 192.168.1.1 and the AIRPORT is 10.0.1.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

can you not change one of the routers so they both run the same subnet?
