Hey all,
I'm hoping someone can share some experience with me. I've got a TimeWarner 300Mbps connection. At the modem (a NETGEAR DOCSIS 3.0) I'm able to pull down ~275Mbps. However my Netgear WNDR3700v4 router looses on average about 100+Mbps, giving me performance in the 165Mbps range.

go to stock fw if u want faster nat + no features/crap qos, or stay on ddwrt with many features/good qos + slower nat. all routers are like this some better some worse depending on the cpu, cause ddwrt is software driven, there is no fix besides what i mentioned, or any of the options i list below.
i get the following nat speed on wndr4300 v1 which is the same as wndr3700 v4 just with a 3x3 5ghz radio:
qos off - 180mbps
qos on (999999/999999) htb + fq_codel - 85mbps
qos on (999999/999999) hfsc + fq_codel - 87mbps
there is no nat acceleration or hw nat support in ddwrt, probably cause of lack of (open available) drivers for it, a custom design attempt last year ddtb (ddwrt turbo boost), was attempted, while it helped a lot, it added many random problems like router lockups, wifi lockups, routing issues, reboots, etc. it was removed with no eta of return, it also didnt work with qos
only options & both cost money:
1. buy a better router, the most powerful SUPPORTED atheros router (to my knowledge) is the wdr4900 v1 (not v2), with its power pc arch 800mhz cpu, vs the mips based 560mhz in wndr3700 v4, or newer mips based qualcomm atheros cpu in the v2 wdr4900 & others thats at 720mhz.
2. make a custom desktop pc with a mini itx board (full size should work too), using a real full power desktop cpu from intel or amd, any cheap quad or even dual will work. there is x86/64 builds of ddwrt (costs a bit for full version with equal features u have now), also would have to buy 1 or 2 wifi nics (must be supported by ath9k/10k ONLY), & a unmanaged switch for more lan ports, plus a case & psu etc
option 1 is cheaper its still a "cheap" router for the specs it has, still a powerful router but im not sure how much nat perf wdr4900 v1 gets, i dont have another equivalent router to link it with to test with iperf, so i think it will bottleneck by using any of my others to test it (theyre slower than this one)..
option 2 is more expensive, but upgradeable & immensely more powerful, that should be able to get gigabit nat performance even with ddwrt's software mode, by brute cpu power, this option is also larger, MAYBE less appealing to look at unless u get a good case etc _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

probably lack of (open available) drivers for hw nat, usually is the issue when it comes to supporting something new with linux _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

that old slow 400mhz will not come even close to 200mbps..thats also a 6 year old review from builds at the time
as said, software mode, everythings done on the cpu. like on an emulator, using software mode (cpu) is slower, hardware mode (cpu+gpu) is faster. all open source router firmwares are like this until if ever, hw nat get support _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

any cheap alternatives to get that sort of speed with dd-wrt? and when I mean cheap I mean dirt cheap...
"dirt cheap"? no, best is any ar7161 cpu router, (wndr3700 v1 etc), any qualcomm atheros 720mhz cpu router (1043nd v2 etc) would be better, wdr4900v1 would be best but isnt dirt cheap (800mhz freescale).. _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)
