Hello,
I have a wireless network set-up at my motel with 4 access points. My internet plan allows 500GB a month. I have problems with over usage. I have slowed the data transfer rate in the access points to deter the people from streaming and peer to peer. I have spent some time looking at this software in the router and tried to make some sense of it. It’s a Buffalo Router Loaded with the DD-WRT software. I was hoping to get some recommendations how to restrict the bandwidth to keep in my internet provider’s limits.
Thank-you.
I posted this a few months ago and had a few responses. one was to change the QOS and slow tings down. when I try to do this the router seems to stop allowing access to the internet. when I disable the feature it works fine again. Not sure what I am doing wrong.
It was also recommended to install a hotspot software. the link that was given to me doesn't work. does anyone know where to get some of this software? free would be preferable. Any other ideas?

what router(s)?
what build on them? if its not the latest, update first, link below in red font
what were the qos settings u tried that u claimed to not work?
before u start ur going to have to know that no matter how slow u make every user or subnet etc, if ur motel is that busy all the time, ull probably always go over the limit short of u know..giving everyone 10 kbps which is unusable. _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

WZR-600DHP2 Router.
DD-WRT v24SP2- (10/23/13) std - build 22621 Firmware.
When I go under QOS and enable. then I change the download and upload kbps it seems to stop the router from working properly. once I disable it things work fine. At my motel 3/4 of my 45 tenants are monthly or live here full time. When I can figure out who they are I block them and encourage them to get their own connection. I have had some days when the usage is over 60000 MB. I was hoping to slow things down to get people to get their own connection. what are your thoughts on installing hot spot software to restrict usage?
Cheers
Peter
thats probably why qos is broken, its bad on older builds
are all the routers the same buffalo one? how are they connected to eachother wired through switch or wireless wds?
qos will put some processing load on the hardware which is normal what is the internet speed plan u have, down/up mbps?
i dont recommend using hotspot software/in the cloud stuff for management like this, manual is better
that router is also a broadcom model so this is in the wrong section, this is atheros. on paper it has good specs, so qos should do well on it (compared to many other supported routers) _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

I only have the one router. I have four TRENDnet N300 high Power Access Points (TEW-735AP). They are hardwired through POE switches. I will check the internet plan but I think it's 50 mbps up/down. I know it's 500GB of Data per month. What section should I be in?
Cheers

broadcom since the router in question is broadcom hardware, but a mod can just move the thread over, since i already started replying i might as well continue
when u update the main router to a current build & know the isp plan speeds then u can try qos again it should work _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

I ended up using the last bin file (07/09/2015 01:10PM 28,442,896 factory-to-dd-wrt.bin). My service provider is Telus.I am on a Business 50 plan which gives me 500FB of total data. when I asked what the speeds were I was told that 50 MBPS up and 3 MBPS down. please let me know what I should change the downlink and uplink speeds to (KBPS).would you recommend doing anything with the Default Bandwidth Level?
Cheers

webflash is for upgrading ddwrt --> newer ddwrt by gui but factory files could work if done the long way like tftp
50mbps UP & 3mbps DOWN..? im going to think u or they meant 50 down & 3 up.
for 50mbps whatever direction its on, enter it as 47616. for 3mbps enter 2826, this is for the global settings on top of qos page. theyre a little conservative since i dont know the max actual speeds u get in real world & the point of qos is for the router to control flow, not the isp hardware or u lag horribly.
port: wan
packet scheduler: htb
queueing discipline: fq_codel
if u do not have the queueing discipline setting, then use hfsc for packet scheduler instead.
these are global settings, regardless of user load total throughput will never exceed the global values entered on top, this prevents large delays & giant latency that makes everything unusable.
after that theres multiple ways u try to implement ur control, by subnets ranges, by certain ips only, or as u mentioned default bandwidth level at the bottom of the qos page for wan down/up bandwidth. if thats set to like 2048 kbps down & 256 kbps up, then every user connected to that router including urself, will get that speed only which is 2mbps/0.25mbps _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

Not entirely sure what you mean by this? should I do a different upgrade?
When I use the values you suggested things don't really work. When I do a speed test it times out. The page to reply to you won't even load. Is that because too many people are trying to access the web through the same connection?
Before you gave me those values I tried different settings for QOS up & down and nothing seemed to work properly. I went as high as 9999999. Am I missing something? I am about ready to cancel the internet for my monthly tenants as this is getting ridiculous!
Thanks for you help!

post a full screenshot of the qos page in its current state please.
if the build the router is running is not 27506, then use the webflash named file in the administration --> firmware update tab _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)
