Hello.
I searched the forum and i couldnt find a nice guild so i'm fancying people who have experiences would help me get a new router for flashing with dd-wrt to be able to use open vpn.
I've heard CPU and ram is important and if they are low they can limit the connection speed but i was not sure how much would they limit it or what is a good cpu or ram to be able to get the same speed when using a direct connection on open vpn on a laptop.
I was looking at Lynksis routers.
So please any advive and information about this would be highly appreciated .
Thanks much

Asus and Netgear makes the best routers.

Asus RT-ac87U
Asus RT-ac68U
Asus RT-ac66U

Netgear R7000

The R7000 and the RT-ac68U have similar performance. A 1.2Ghz dual core processor.

The RT-ac87U have a dual core processor + a dedicated processor for the 5Ghz wifi.

The RT-ac66U have single core processor. Handles a wan up to 100Mbit/s without vpn.

Be careful with Linksys. DD-wrt is not supported yet for many model due to a new wifi chip (Marwell).

Hello thanks for the reply. They seem abit expensive, Do you have any other model on mind? 100mbps without vpn doesnt matter, I'm talking about the speed with VPN. As long as it gets 10mbps it should be good
Thank you

I recently bought a Linksys e1200 specifically for DD-WRT VPN usage and I just got 24Mbps on my 30Mbps line through my VPN tunnel.

I've seen it on sale as low as $24 Canadian. Regularly $50.

It was recommended online as the cheap option for "top 5 DD-WRT routers".

It may be enough to suit your needs.

Thanks so do you recommend the CPU power of this unit?
I also have a few left over Ubiquiti devices with 8mg flash but unfortunatley dd-wrt needs activation for ubiquiti devices. Smile
And what difference is mini wrt and full one (8m)
Thanks again

(This is a re-post after more testing with edits.)

Firstly, yes, this is a v2 e1200. My apologies for not adding that in my OP.

Well, once again I have to embarrass myself here on the forums. It seems at some point, I restored my router to factory default settings, though I do not recall doing it... Confused

So that was why I got such good speeds when tested. Embarassed

Here are examples using 3 ways of testing. (Using both VPN and speed test servers in L.A..)

No VPN

Highest: 25Mbps

OpenVPN Router Client

Highest: 4.5Mbps (Edit: Make that 5Mbps)

Using AES-128 CBC (Apparently faster than Blowfish CBC.)

VPN through Windows Network connection/Software

Highest: 25Mbps

So if you want better speeds, I'd recommend something more powerful than the e1200v2 if you are set on using it this way.

Sorry for my earlier misinformation! As the name suggests, I am new at this stuff.

Personal side note:

After buying this router specifically for VPN use, I've come to the conclusion it's better for me to just run their software or set up Network connections (Connects on start up or manually.) so I can connect through my Networks Connections task bar icon. (<- Having chosen the Network Connections method.)

I maintain better speeds that way. I also don't really need to run my PS3/360 through a VPN. Those are the only other things connected to it. Though it was fun learning this stuff nonetheless!!
