I just received mine from newegg however it is revision A2. Googling doesn't bring up any results for this so I think it might be brand new. I'm afraid to try flashing with the A1 firmware in the case that the internals are different.
Hmm, reading your post got me thinking, I've been testing mine with r27378 for the A1 and r28211 seems to work fine too...I flipped the router and just noticed it was version A2, so it must work lol.

For some reason I wasn't getting auto notifications to this thread. That is good info to know though. Part of the reason I bought it was for open source firmware support.

Strange. I just got mine from Newegg yesterday and it's an A1. Hope I don't miss anything important.
Sometimes older models are better. I think it was the linksys WRT54G where they reduced RAM on latter models. For all we know the D-link revision could just be updating labeling to show Windows 10 support.
I just bought a D-Link DIR-859 after my trusty WRT54G router running DD-WRT died after years of abuse. Unfortunately, the hardware revisions I received is A3. Will the DD-WRT firmware, which is intended for hardware revision A1, work on my A3 revision router? I paid $130 for this router, so I do not want to ruin the product and not be able to return it if the firmware gets ruined.
The reason I am considering DD-WRT for this new router is because the factory firmware does not have the option for wireless MAC filters, which is unbelievable.

well im facing bad days with my DIR-615 and recovery is pain in the ass compare to TP-link
TFTP is not working at all, as well serial ttl to usb is funny (kermit way)

are u using the 192.168.0.1 recovery method? (search dir-825 recovery, its the same for every dlink router, just use the appropriate.img file for router in question).. _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

I am not that daring to test a firmware intended for an older hardware revision of this router. If nobody posts back that it works soon, I am going to return this router and buy a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. If that stock firmware is junk, at least the R7000 seems to have fairly solid DD-WRT support.
I spent the last 3 hours reading amazon, bestbuy, newegg, etc. reviews for the top modern routers. I only look at the bad comments, but they all seem to have the same issues - dropped signals, signals get weaker unless you reboot (the router), router stops working entirely after the return period, customer service is horrible, wired performance sucks, one of the wireless bands stops functioning, etc. Has it always been this way with routers? I ran a Linksys version 2 WRT54G for 10 years without issue (at least not with the DD-WRT firmware - the Linksys firmware needed to be rebooted every 6-12 months). I am really scared to dish out this kind of cash after reading these reviews.
What is the most reliable modern DD-WRT router with gigabit and AC wireless? I need a sold fallback option.

Still with the stock firmware, I have already tried the standard D-Link procedure to enter recovery mode (keep reset pressed while powering on the router). With this procedure, DIR-859 seems to be in fact entering recovery mode, however it does not respond to any of the standard IP addresses (eg: 192.168.0.1, 192,168.1.1., 192.168.0.101) I could use to revert back to stock firmware in case I get it bricked when flashing DD-WRT. And yes, I configured the IP address of my PC to a fixed one on the right subnet for each of the IPs I tested.
Any tip about how to revert the DIR-859 firmware back to stock would be appreciated! And after this I will try DD-WRT on Rev A3 and I will let you know if it works!

1st, you need to be wired connected to a lan port of your router. then:
D-LINK all revert the same fashion. HOLD the reset button 30 seconds then power will blink. Set your ip to 192.168.0.2 and netmask to 255.255.255.0 (on your NIC)then you try to access 192.168.0.1 and you should have a special interface to upload the firmware 1.04 you will have download from the dlink website.
