Router: Netgear R6400
Firmware-Version: DD-WRT v3.0-r29968M (06/17/16)
Kernel Version: Linux 4.4.13 #950 SMP Thu Jun 16 06:25:59 CEST 2016 armv7l
Status: Working until now
Reset: 30/30/30
Previous: manufacturer supplied
Errors: Yes

I have the router set to automated restart: daily 4 AM. Today around 18h the router hang. Symptoms... all lights white; no error on router. Connection to router's address is possible but takes several minutes. Stats showed

Received (RX 62120, OK, no error
Transmitted (TX) 45780, OK, 15085 errors

I was not able to log in as admin.

Power off/on - no change.

Issue fixed only partly by pressing reset. I have Ethernet cable connection to router (and internet). WLAN working for some devices but no internet connection and no connection to dd-wrt GUI possible from WLAN.

Any suggestion much appreciated

... a 30/30/30 reset was necessary the first time (which of course deleted all settings).

Another outage just now - 30 sec reset to get a working router.

You are using one of the earlier K4 builds, which were not always stable.
Upgrade to the latest build and try again. Do not forget to reset before and after upgrade.

30/30/30 is useless on ARM devices. Use erase nvram before and after upgrading to latest as egc suggested.

Other builds recommended: 29193 BS, 29300 Kong.

@egc - Thank you. But I think I'm on the latest build as of this AM

Are you aware of a stable build for Netgear R6400? When I read thru the forum and wikis I could only locate this beta.

Thank you. Unfortunately I'm unable to Telnet or SSH into the device (no access possible) with this error.

Applied latest firmware. I was mislead by an outdated reference in the Supported Devices page https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Netgear

Firmware Version: DD-WRT v3.0-r30471 (08/24/16)
Uptime until error: 23 hrs+
Uptime now: 54 min

wl0:
Received (RX)100% 94902 OK, no error
Transmitted (TX) 70% 68919 OK, 29767 errors

wl1:
none (5 GHz AC only - no device connected)

My network-manager tells me Ethernet ping time to router < 0.5 ms. WLAN ping time avg. < 2sec in case of working connection. In case of error WLAN ping time up to 20 sec.

Tried nvram erase & reboot. Thereafter only working Ethernet connection. I have WLAN connection with all attached devices (Ubuntu/Android/W7) but no connection to Internet and destination host unreachable message from ping command.

Typical and repeated network-manager log entry in case of error (time between disconnect sapprox. 2 min):

Quote:
Aug 30 09:15:27 BW-TP-W520 NetworkManager[19428]: <warn> [1472541327.0488] sup-iface[0x20a60a0,wlan1]: connection disconnected (reason 7)

Aug 30 09:15:27 BW-TP-W520 NetworkManager[19428]: <info> [1472541327.1182] device (wlan1): supplicant interface state: associating -> associated
Aug 30 09:15:27 BW-TP-W520 NetworkManager[19428]: <info> [1472541327.1235] device (wlan1): supplicant interface state: associated -> 4-way handshake
Aug 30 09:15:27 BW-TP-W520 NetworkManager[19428]: <info> [1472541327.1426] device (wlan1): supplicant interface state: 4-way handshake -> completed

Apparently a scheduled reboot once a day doesn't help.

Any advise welcome. Txs -mgw

Hmm that's odd that you have so many errors. Have you tried some of the builds I told you? Have you used nvram erase or erase nvram? What are your Wi-Fi settings on ddwrt? Post screenshots if it's easier for you.

Yes (now DD-WRT v3.0-r30471 (08/24/16)) and yes (nvram erase command). After issuing the nvram erase cmd only the Ethernet connection comes to work. I had to do a power off/30 sec reset (reset button on router), which off course deletes the settings.

WiFi settings are largely default: AP/mixed different names for wl0 and wl1 / channel = Auto and 20 Mhz. Security WPA2 Personal with AES. No regulation and I didn't use any of the "advanced settings".

Code:
root@DD-WRT:~# wl status

Nvram erase is probably not working. The command is erase nvram, after issuing this command you should see a response like: Flash is NAND, erase {xxxxx]
This is a must do, to tackle these weird problems

You could have a bad flash so flash again this build should work

Errors could be due to interference (altough you should expect Rx errors). Do a site survey or use Wifi analyzer on your phone to look for empty channels

Transmit error can be due to use of beamforming or Air time fairness, do not use it

if you can set Sensitivity Range (ACK Timing) (I do not think you can set it on your router) lower it to 300 or even diable it by setting it to 0

@mgw, exactly what egc said I was looking for. First of all nvram erase does nothing so you have a big problem there since I'm preeety sure that's the source of your problems.

Second I was looking for airtime fairness, as egc said, when enabled most of the time causes troubles so keep it disabled. Beamforming explicit and implicit never gave me troubles so probably you should see what is better for you.

Choose channels that are empty after doing the survey, on 2.4 if it's too crowded don't use 40mhz width.

Use regulatory domain Venezuela (this gives you more power in mids and lower channels on 5ghz, than US reg domain). If that gives you troubles choose USA.

On 5ghz use high channels since allow more output power from the router. Choose above 140 and 80mhz width if you want to squeeze all bandwidth. For example, extension lower lower, 161.

Always on Wi-Fi settings after changing one setting hit save and the apply and wait for refresh, for example:
Change regulatory domain then save and apply, then change channel width, save and apply, then change channel save and apply, etc

I think that's pretty much it.

Sure the busybox cmd is erase [device] which is what I did.

Hmmm... in case this a bad flash shouldn't it not work at all?

I did a site survey: showing neighborhood on 2 and 11 with very low QoS. Auto mode places the device to channel 1. However I use 6.

As I wrote, I use the default settings thus beam forming and air time fairness are switched off by default for wl1 (5 Ghz).

Didn't see a setting for this in advanced wireless settings menu.

Tx error means either defect R6400 or more likely your wireless clients driver is buggy.

I have the R6400 running in production with more then 10 different clients at the same time, no issues at all.

Hmmm... shouldn't in this case the router not work at all... device is brand new by the way.

Latest stats from wl0 (wl1 active but not in use):

Received (RX) 14392709 OK, no error
Transmitted (TX) 25548293 OK, 308 errors
Uptime now 1 day 23:58 hrs (I stopped automated daily reboots)

This is a mix of Ubuntu/Kubuntu 16.04, Windows 7, several Android (CM and Sony, LG variants), and Linux on Samsung TV and a Squeezebox. I would not expect these to be all buggy...

I should have added that all devices have the same issue in case of error.
