I have got an R6250, which is running stock firmware.

When I try to load DD-WRT the router goes into a rolling reboot and I have to recover it by loading the stock firmware via TFTP.

I have tried upgrading from stock firmware 1.0.0.62 (initial) and 1.0.4.2 (latest) to Kong's 30800M and 30700M builds but the router goes into a rolling reboot when it tries to boot the DD-WRT builds.

I have issued flash -erase and nvram erase when in CFE but the result is the same in that the router goes into rolling reboots when trying to boot DD-WRT.

Any ideas as to a resolution?

Thank you very much.

The output from an unsuccessful boot up is below:

I do not have this router. The following are just suggestions.

Do not update to a newer version of the stock firmware. It is not needed and in some cases (TP-Link) can stop users from being able to flash dd-wrt.

Use the correct build:
For flashing from factory to dd-wrt use, for example: ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/10-27-2016-r30805/netgear-r6250/factory-to-dd-wrt.chk

For subsequent dd-wrt releases, newer versions:
Use the webflash file located in the netgear-r6250 folder inside the build folder. It is suggested by others to do a reset every time you upgrade the firmware. Personally I do not do resets unless I am coming from a very old build to a current one. I also have to many routers to bother with resets.

If the stock firmware will not allow you to upload the dd-wrt firmware, then try and flash it via TFTP just like you did for the recovery. I would flash the factory to dd-wrt build though. For TFTP the trick is to wait about 10-15 min to make sure the router is done flashing and then reboot it.

Thank you very much for the reply.

I tried the suggestions but the situation remains the same.

Your flash chip is the problem, you have a bad block around the area where dd-wrts rootfs sits, since the size of oem kernel and ours are different it still works with oem, but not with our kernel, normally bad blocks should be handled by the flashing routine, obviously this is not the case in the firmware you used for flashing dd-wrt.

Thank you for the quick reply and explanation.

Would it be possible to write to another location outside of the bad black area by using flash -offset in CFE (as described in https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Serial_Recovery)?

Thank you again.

I also have the same problem.

Boot Rom is spansion. not samsung.

I had tried to use tftp. It does not work again.

Do you have solution to solve this issues?

ROM Chip is Spansion, not samsung. I had open the case.

No since I did not have such a unit myself yet, thus can't check what needs to be done.

I had tried to use tftp. It does not work again.

The problem that I am facing is that I cannot upgrade to DD-WRT from any Netgear firmware.

I think you are facing a different problem.

Looking at the TRAC ticket (#5620) that you logged, you have been running DD-WRT but cannot upgrade to 30805 from 30432 or another version of Netgear firmware.

Have you captured a boot log from the serial port when it fails to boot up with 30805? This output will help to provide further information as to why it fails to boot up.

Anything newer to 30432 will brick your AC1450/R6250/R6300v1-v2-ch because BS builds are too large.

Thank you for highlighting this problem.

I have been trying Kong's builds only so I believe I am not hitting this particular issue whereas "M" could be hitting the issue.

R6300v1 does work with anything newer than 30432, curently running 30826. I did upgrade to every single beta after 30432 with no trouble. R6300v1 only, i can't say anything about the other models you mentioned.

That's odd. None of these tickets were fixed.

http://svn.dd-wrt.com/ticket/5571
http://svn.dd-wrt.com/ticket/5530
http://svn.dd-wrt.com/ticket/5560

I wouldn't assume the same for others models.

Questions for <Kong> if you have time:

Would it be possible to write to another location outside of the bad black area by using flash -offset in CFE (as described in https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Serial_Recovery)?

Otherwise, is it possible to install your build to and boot from a USB drive? For example, http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=44448.

Thank you for your help.

I have confirmed that I am facing the same issue with my netgear- r6250 due to size issue. Please let me know if any options exist to remedy this issue.

Thanks,
