The Asus RT-AC5300 I purchased had encrypted firmware and the newest version of it. It would not webload. That being said... It had to be removed forcibly against its will. In this case no means yes. I will have it my way
The answer is YES, on the US models the firmware can still be overwritten on the unit regardless. Using the standard broadcom mtd-write2 utility
So, hooked up a serial cable to this router...
Standard 115200,8,n,1
NOTICE I DIDNT HOOK UP THE RED CABLE. DO NOT USE THE VCC PEOPLE.
To Stop the BootLoader CTRL-C-ENTER when it starts to boot the largest image in the history of router firmware (Takes a minute to boot... its ridiculous...)
will Get you to a CFE> Prompt for the boot goodies.
Stock WebGUI has the firmware Check, but the utilities and CFE are still intact to flash manually by serial cable. _________________ My Karma ran over your Dogma

I Loaded Asus Merlin to do a Dual Core VPN Speed Test.
This router sucks for VPN Speeds for the Price. The Max I could get after turning of NAT acceleration and all my knowm speed tweaks was 60Mbps, and it was utilizing both cores.
Crazy that the Linksys WRT1900ACS outperforms this routers CPU at 1/3 the cost.
The CPU arch is garbage. For the price of this thing, you would be better off building a custom rig.
It would be cool as a main router though, just not as a VPN Router. Save your $$$ and get a Netgear X10.
I am gonna keep messing with it to see what the max I can crank out of it. _________________ My Karma ran over your Dogma

Ive flash kongs latest build to my Asus RT-AC5300. Everything is working perfectly. I did notice tho that the internet light on the router is lit up in RED. This usually means the router has no connection to the internet but in my case it does.
Is this normal? Or is there a option I can tick to turn it from RED to WHITE.
Its not a big deal as everything is working, I was just wondering..

So I bought a 3rd Asus AC5300 yesterday 3/29/2017. My other two were purchased in December 2016 so it has been a while since I have updated one to DD-wrt. I have been following this thread for a while and I had posted my findings from my original experience. So this time I took notes on my updatings. First, the firmware that I found on the stock router I have listed below.
Asus ac 5300 - 3.0.0.4.380.3341
I downloaded Brain Slayers most recent version of beta firmware.
From the webif I installed Brainslayers firmware. The device rebooted. It took about a minute to reboot.
Just like last time, the lan ports did not appear to work or have dhcp. So I logged in to the router wirelessly ssid:ddwrt open. I was prompted to change the default password which I did. I then proceeded to install Kongs firmware from the webif. The router rebooted which takes about a minutes or so. Once the reboot was completed, my nic card pulled an IP address through dhcp and I was up and running. I am curious as to what has been different with my 3 rigs compared to everyone elses experience.
The only two things about this is that the wan mac address on all of my asus ac5300 00:00:00:00:00:01 which I am pretty sure a bug, but it is functional.
The other thing is that none of Brainslayers versions work with the lan ports and DHCP. Maybe there is a fix for this, but Kongs FW has been working great since day 1. _________________ Please Fix The Following Bugs:

Thanks, it was probably a good idea, because sploit was confusing the thread with posting I believe upgrade problems with a linksys model as compared to the Asus Ac 5300.
Thanks, I was just checking my memory. _________________ Please Fix The Following Bugs:

Sorry guys, I have these threads bookmarked and posted stuff rapidly and clicked the wrong threads. I copied the data to the other threads. _________________ My Karma ran over your Dogma

Sploit, no worries, but I am curious about your experience with the Asus Router. I have now done 3 with my steps. Did you attempt these steps or just go straight to the serial cable? _________________ Please Fix The Following Bugs:

The one I got had the newest firmware and wouldn't accept anything. I connected the serial cable and watched it execute the Linksys Firmware updater scripts that check for the encryption.
I went straight to the serial and flashed that way.
I did not tolerate the slow VPN speeds so it had to go. _________________ My Karma ran over your Dogma

Like with dun4cheap, I could not directly load the latest beta (r31924) from the DD-WRT web site using the web interface or using the Asus recovery software. The device would not boot after the update.
I was able to load r31722 using the recovery software. After this I attempted to load r31924 and no go either using the web interface or the recovery software.
This seems to work. I wanted to update on a router that I did not have online so that is why I am working with a second router. I will set it up identically to my older 31722 setup and hopefully a couple of bugs I am experiencing will go away. (DDNS settings changes crash router but was able to directly write to nvram and set up DDNS. Also wl2 does not seem to work. I am not sure if this is a hardware issue or DD-WRT yet).
My guess is that I could probably have directly updated with Kong's r31980m.
Is anyone else experiencing this fun when updating this router?

I am having similar fun to everyone else with my Asus RT-AC5300.... After attempting to load the BS beta version and then flash the Kong version (via TFTP, during the 12 ping response window) without success, I am finally back to square zero with the Asus stock firmware (3.0.0.4.380_7627). I am going to try this again, however, am interested in the best method for success.
As a refresher on what I tried to do:
1. Using Asus stock firmware update webpage, I loaded the BS beta version r32170 (dated 6-1-17).
2. After the reboot sequence similar to an earlier post, I loaded, via TFTP (when the router responded to a ping), the newest Kong version.
3. The TFT transmission was successful, however, the router never came backup, even after several power cycles. I decided to do a 30-30-30 to reset back to the emergency firmware loader, load the stock firmware back and try again.
