Hi I have this new Archer C8 with original firmware and another Asus router with dd-wrt which I would like to put in as repeater bridge. The problem is that even that I do exactly as it should be the thing doesnt work. My other clients see the repeater bridge but they are stuck at "Obtaining IP address".
There is one sentence in the beginning I dont understand. The primary router should be in AP mode. What does this mean.

Need to tell what model the ASUS router is and what dd-wrt build it has?

You will also get better replies about these routers in the broadcom forum
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=1

Also if setup correctly it usually takes a reboot to work.
Also know that many dd-wrt builds do not work for repeater bridge

I am not familiar with the wl500g but I would think it should make a RB.
Try without any security on the wl0.1(VAP) to see if it works.
Also make sure it is in 'router' mode.
Make sure its gateway IP is set to main router that is holding the WAN connection.
Also don't think this is mentioned in the old wiki but you should disable DNSMasq in Services page.
And....with that build if you get the RB working with no security on VAP and want to enable its security it must be exactly same as main physical interface (wl0)
The RB router should be in G only mode and primary must be in NG mixed
Good luck
