well, i hope as you are in UK you are on BT the other ISP providers have sketchy setup for 3 rd party routers aka non ISP routers....
I currently use TP-Link WR1043ND v2 or v3 with BT infinity and it works like a charm...
You can find it on decent prise on Ebay as well you can find Dir-862l or one idea better R7000 all they trade on a reasonable price....
for VPN use you'd need router with 8MB or more flash size ram and fast CPU...
security-wise DD-WRT is much better than any ISP provided router as well better than Tomato firmware, it has frequent updates + better security features like IPtables, SPI firewall and some anti DDoS features....
Apple airport extreme is quite expensive and does not have a decent range like TP-Link WR1043ND v2 or R7000.... _________________ Atheros

yep 862l will do well it has enough flash ram and ram the cpu is the same like Archer C7 v2 and tplink wr1043nd v2
all they share the same chassis (SoC)
TP-LINK Archer C50 AC1200 is not that good and its not dd-wrt supported for dd-wrt router i can recommend

I am not able to find the Dir-862l, even on ebay, there are some from the USA but once the delivery charge is added and the plug issue and maybe import duties.
You know anywhere else i could get one?
i really don't want a 2nd hand one.
or a similar price one £40 approx?
I would prefer a d'link i quite like that brand but if not... others maybe be fine.
Also one with DDOS attack protection
I do have a apple AirPort Extreme 802.11n its the completely flat one horizontal not upright.
