Hello guys and gals! I currently have an Ubee dvw3201 modem/router combo with Time Warner Cable for $10/m. I'm planning on buying a Linksys WRT54GL,would any of you say that's a good or bad investment? I also am in need of a modem that is compatible with the Linksys if it is any good? The 2 reasons why I'm wanting to get that is to get rid of the TWC +$10/m and wanting to use a VPN for more protection. Thanks everyone! 💜

You can use any modem and since it's 2017 and you want to use VPN, I'd say a wrt54gl is a bad choice.

Thanks for the reply! May I inquire why a Linksys WRT54GL is a bad choice? Any suggestions for another DD-WRT enabled router(s) and why? I have VPN unlimited, read the DD-WRT OpenVPN configuration guide if that counts

The wrt54gl is old with a slow CPU. Not good for vpn. If you are going out to spend any money you could do so much better.
I just sold an r6250 with a dual core 800mhz CPU for $30.
If you buy the wrt54gl in the store it will be more than $30 and with a 200mhz single core CPU.

You can disregard the pm I sent you yesterday. That router sold.

My apologies, I have not noticed any PM's, I'm new here. But I definitely do appreciate it! Been searching for routers with dd-wrt, unless I'm doing it wrong, there's not much to buy. There's a refurbished Asus RT-N66R, but I can't find the CPU for the life of me... That, and refurbished scares me

Here is a list of the routers that are supported and their specs.
Contrary to what Alozaros says, there are better routers for vpn than the r6400 and dir-862l.
Check your pm.

Thanks a lot you two! I've been reading up on routers for the whole day almost, checked out all you've shown too. Would you guys say it's a bad decision to buy an Asus RT-AC1200? More into my comfort zone to buy. To top that, I would need to buy a modem too which I don't know much about currently.

The rt-ac1200 isn't supported by dd-wrt.

Asus RT-AC1200G+* My bad. But Google keeps automatically going to just RT-AC1200 tho, so I looked elsewhere. Linksys EA6200 seems pretty good for the price, am I wrong?
