I bought this as is from ebay. It was in a boot loop, Ihave tried to flash almost every stock firmware, Kongs latest and the latest from brainslayer.

Nothing works. I'm attaching the logs of the stock flash, dd-wrt flash and nvram show.

If anyone cand help, I would be grateful.

Hey Mike
I have the same CFE on my R8500 though I changed the default ip to 192.168.1.5 to avoid conflicts in my network.

Get 30700 and tftp it. Kong's later versions are giving my R8500 fits.

Erase the nvram too.

Dave

Mike? I'll try that build, if I can find it.

Btw, in case I wasn't clear, I can only flash it using the serial console. It never boots up.

Hey, Malachi, Welcome to the bandwagon Wink
This is a known issue with the recent R8500 units.
You will soon see prices much more cheaper on eBay in the coming days Smile

I have several posts on this issue, but no attention from the Devs. Sad

The current dd-wrt support level of AC5300 units is pathetic:

- I have DLINK DIR895l, doesn't work with BS build( reported by many others)
- I have R8500, which has the same issue as yours (reported by many others too)
- Linksys EA9500 No support at all.

The only thing left out is the ASUS RT-AC5300, but don't want to take risk again.
Went back to R7000 for now Sad

Yet, for your R8500.
You should be able to go back to the following two builds using CFE and can try to debug it further:
1.
- tathagata release: K3_R8500_17-Feb-2016.chk
Link:
https://www.myopenrouter.com/download/dd-wrt-r8500-tathagata-release-revision-28813
2.
- Netgear initial base release: R8500-V1.0.0.28_1.0.15.chk

Thanks,
Malachi

Ok I will try those. Thanks.
I thought I saw in one of your posts that you were able to flash the first firmware release from netgear.
It doesn't work on mine.
I bought 2 from eBay that were bricked. One of them I'm using now with kong 30700 build.
I had kongs latest on it a few minutes ago. They seem the same.
The lower channel 5ghz is not very good. The same symptoms as my r8000 lower 5ghz radio.
Could be conflict with my next door neighbor. I get about 15 Mbps out of my 60
If I set the width to 20mhz I get full speed. So must be interference.

Yes, It worked for me the very first time when I updated form stock to Kong's 11/14 build.
But later, when I did update to 12/2, I got into very similar issue that you have just described.
Later when I tried to downgrade to older build things got crazy. Finally it bricked when I updated to latest Netgear firmware.
Since then I'm not able to flash to any latest dd-wrt builds the netgear ones.
But I don't think I tried 30700 build, this is good news indeed.

I was able to get the tathagata firmware on it. That's probably what messed it up to begin with.
I wish people would stop using his firmware.

Well lower 5G is supposed to be not as good, much less power allowed.

Do the logs mean anything to you Kong?

Btw, the second bricked one that I recovered with serial, had your build 30700 running on it when I went to bed.
This morning the 2.4ghz radio wasn't broadcasting even though the gui indicated it was on.
I rebooted it and it is now in a boot loop again.

Flash my build and run:

nvram erase (not erase nvram as in dd-wrt)

on the CFE prompt.

BrainSlayers build do not work an netgear arm units, he rolled back my init changes a while ago and he did not listen and I have better things to do than argue with him.

I already did that. I did nvram erase after stopping the cfe. Flashed your build using tftpd then after it rebooted I did another nvram erase from the cfe.

Since I don't know how you got to those nvram vars, try this and show me the output:

CFE>nvram erase

Now power off, power on, then do a nvram show.
