With lots of questions about VPNs on here recently I thought I would post some benchmarks for what you can expect out of the 3200ACM when running as a OpenVPN Client.

All tests performed with PIA using the closest possible VPN server (about 30 miles away).

EDIT: Updated for build r32597

VPN Off

Just to show that the internet is not the bottleneck.

VPN On
encryption: AES-128
hash: SHA-1
lzo compression: yes
mtu: 2000

I have fiddled with a lot of things and this is about as good as it gets while still using encryption.

If you have any tweaks that get you speeds better than this, please drop a comment.

Desktop PIA app for comparison

Build 32555

skylamb,

Thanks for posting. I'm also interested in the OpenVPN client effectiveness and the speed cost.

But You're using a rather old "test" build with that r32555. 2017-07-03

It seems most people are getting good stability with the newer Beta build r32597 2017-07-08 which BrainSlayer had put up in the Beta downloads. Whereas the later builds do seem to have have stability issues, including r32753.

For your tests, you might want to upgrade to that build, r32597, and do your test again.

Thanks for the heads up, I don't check the main 3200ACM thread often enough... I updated the original post with results from r32597

The speeds look good for r32597 too. You're welcome, btw. Have you tried AES 256? That's more along the line of what many will be running.
