Hi Everyone,

Its 1.30am an I been trying to sort this since 5pm... So, some time now!

I got myself a WR841N router today which has V12.

I want to put DDWRT on it, since buying it I have found that difficult. I have read many forums and tried many things. I have a couple of questions if possible....

I have tried the TFTP way, but at the point of rebooting the router for it to talk and request the file from the TFTP Server, nothing happens. I have read up about a Lan Port Start Up Script?,

I figure this could be why it is not requesting the file, but after couple hours of trying I cannot find out where I put the code in for this.

# Fix lan port communication 841 v7, v9, v11
swconfig dev eth0 set enable_vlan 1
swconfig dev eth0 set apply

The next thing is,

As many others I am getting the Error 18005 when trying to load the file the normal way, has anyone been able to get round this without doing the above method?

Thanks in advance guys for the help Smile

It is probably the EU model and there is a special bin that unlocks it and allows you to upgrade thru the interface. I don`t have a copy of it and I don`t know where it is located here but someone does. I have a copy for ver.11 based on TP Link factory firmware #150616. If that is the factory firmware you have it might work. Otherwise someone will have to provide a link. There is a bin available.

Read the section on TFTP for the 841nd here: https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr841nd#tftp_recovery_via_bootloader_for_v8_v9_v10_v11_v12

Rename the dd-wrt file, use international version if you did not buy the router in the US.

You need a TFTP server such as TFTP32 or TFTP64.

I come by this thread last night. I have the international file, and I also have the TFTP32, which is what I was using last night. I have read named the file as ive read about this too just with no luck still.

my build is #160624-EU Model, and as rambling said I think I need the flash to unlock it. what a load of hassle this is.

Thanks guys.

That link is a virtual wealth of information and anyone playing with these "toy" 841s should save it !

They maybe a "toy" to people who can afford to buy a expensive router, but for some people who just want to buy something within their budget, they are not a bad little router.

It runs the DDWRT, as I said I got it sorted. Although, it doesn't have the OpenVpn section because the flash ram is only 4mb.

Lesson learned for me, so I will find a bigger device with a bigger ram.

I jokingly call them toys because one of the mods referred to them as that. I am a big fan. I have 3 tied together covering my few acres and I have no problem at all. One fella here had them covering his whole subdivision. They rock and at only $25 new on _bay....whats not to like.

Fair play mate, call them what you like lol.

As I said thought I could use it for openvpn which is what the main aim of it was for me, but I cant because the DDWRT flash for it don't include the openvpn. so I have had to flash it back to original software. ive just had to ornder a new router to see how that one goes.
