Havent posted in awhile. I thought to use the General Forum due to these 2 referenced routers having 2 different chipsets. I have asked this question at a high level once before but couldn't really find a thread on it specifically.

I currently own a R7000 with Kong 32170. This firmware with a couple minor freezes that required a power off power on reset has been awesome.

When I posed this question before, there were people stating that the R7800 is much faster and better than the R7000. But when I look at the threads for the R7800 I can really find a good answer with the current firmwares as mature as the R7000. I know they both have Kong current release dates but I am not able to find much information on the stability of that hardware.

Reaching out for more current commentary. With potentially more members that actually own a R7800 with DD-WRT loaded. Would you consider this a problem free router with the current firmwares, or just buy another R7000. I would like to get to the bottom of this issue before moving out of my current home and into the new one. Thanks for your time

I have both running rock solid. So the question that you have to ask yourself is, do I need the extra power on the R7800? Well for me it was a "I don't know" so just bought the 7800 to have both SoC manufacturers and play with different settings... other than that, I would buy another R7000. But again depends on your needs, I don't do much, so probably if you use VLANs, QoS, VPN, etc etc maybe you find a wall on the 7800, bug-wise. Also Atheros section (sadly) sucks, badly organised, not much people posting/helping, etc.

both very good and "stable" but stable has its own means...
it depends what you will use it for... so far i haven't seen anything that require regular restart...
with a suitable "stable" Kong builds.... my units has been ON (working) for months without any need to restart or anything particularly bad....
R7800 has much more power and solid WI-FI range also has a multimimo 4 antennas...
R7800 so far is the next to last generations router CPU's at 1.7Ghz...
So far with implementation of SFE, WAN performance will be
increased and there will be not much difference consider reaching 1Gbit speeds on WAN side performance while running DD-WRT ....
Only the price and Chip Vendor will stay different as well routing performance with VPN...
Personally i do like my R7000 but R7800 is way better router for me....both rock solid with Kong builds...
so far few months i have been using 31900 on my R7800.. quite tempted to try a new build, but so far Dev's have a lot of work around
SFE and some new updates + old bugs...

thank you Gurus for your responses. Its not a matter of needing the extra power of not. The r7000 for the past couple years has given me no major issues. When the internet goes down then my whole house is hunting me down and I didn't want that to happen with testing the 7800. But its hard to buy another R7000 knowing that there is something like the 7800 out there. You know what I mean. Now that you guys say that the 7800 is somewhat stable (yes totally understand about the Atheros forum as the only thing I search on there is for the 7800) makes me feel a whole lot better putting more weight on the 7800.

Broadcoms have been great for me ever since I bought my first DD-WRT asus router and its had to break that marriage up.

In any case avoid builds 32XXX, the GUI is screwed up, 328xx is almost fixed so I would wait until 33xxx or 34.

I have less than a week to make the decision. So I gather and have not seen any responses to the new 08/01 Kong Firmware for the 7800. I will continue to monitor for any updates. Thanks guys

New Kong build 08/01 is out!!

Exactly that's why I said it sucks. You won't see much more responses.

Well Gurus, since I don't have much more time to ponder on this decision and like you said, the Atheros section is mucho messy that I am gonna take the plunge and go with the R7800. To be honest, I am really hesitant to do it because I cant seem to find any firmware information and stability regarding this router. I am going to repurpose the faithful R7000 obviously with a heavy heart.

Speaking of the R7000, I am also a little hesitant to upgrade the firmware to a newer one since it looks like the SFE implementation has caused a wide array of opinions regarding the hardware and the software. Of course I have full confidence that the devs will eventually hammer them out using information from this board and I am forever grateful. So crossing my fingers that the install and operation of whatever firmware that is available at the time that I get the unit meets my needs.

Thanks Devs and responders for their hard work and dedication to the cause.

Wow Amazon is fast. I ordered it today and I got it today. I just got home from picking up the new R7800. Little afraid to crack the seal to try to install the firmware 08/02 on it. The steps to flash from stock to DD-WRT is not much different than when I flashed previous routers. Maybe after showering I can muster the energy to start the process.

I am not trying to validate my purchase of the R7800. I mean I own it so I have to own up to what ever comes with this decision. But I haven't seen so many people comment on if they like it or not. I saw very few bad comments if any for the R7000 over the years. But I have seen some negative commentary on the R7800 and its not even that old. Which FW do you use on it currently? Alozaros has given me some very good feed back on his feelings about the router and the FW that he uses. Probably gonna do the flash tonight when I get home from work and make one last decision on which FW to load while reading these forums.

WTH, did they do a drone drop ??? Shocked

If you have any trouble --
For first install you should really use Kong
http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-IPQ806X/r31240/
then what ever .bin you want.

The r33066 seems to be good on the IPQ806X routers.

Hey man thanks for the tips. I read all of the README and docs on Kongs site before I ever do anything including buying the Router itself.

Not a drone drop but just like my TP LINK plugs, they must have a massive warehouse nearby where certain products qualify for same day ordering same day delivery. Maybe I am just lucky where I live. but yep, ordered, and then they delivered to my preferred Amazon Locker in a major grocery store near my house. Almost didn't want it to come that fast so I could ponder the decision a little longer about the 7800 vs the 7000. I opened the box to take a look at it and noticed the base of the router is almost the same as the 7000. The only visual difference is the 4th antennae. Its still in the plastic calling me through the box saying Load DD-WRT... Load DD-WRT. I thought I was going mental.... well maybe I am

on arrival i opened my R7800 followed by R7000 too, and added extra cooling pads to improve heat transfer/disperse so far no need of fan....both units vertically wall mounted, otherwise my cat sleeps on the router at home Smile....

I used to have that issue with the cat also. So on my shelf I raise the router (the old R7000 and the newly installed R7800 high enough where its close to the ceiling of the shelf. I use a dish drying rack for this purpose and it cools down the routers and keeps the cat off because there is no more room to lay on.
