I have a customer who has a weird setup from his isp. They gave him a wan ip address and then a public lan ip address range. The wan ip is what the ip wants to see connected to them but the public ip address has to be routed through the wan ip address. For example.

They gave us wan ip 192. 168. 50.5 with a subnet of 252
Then they said we need to setup a router behind that with a public address of 192.168.12.1 subnet of 248.

Can dd-wrt handle routing this internally like an edge router would?

Why don't you ask that ISP about how to setup a wireless router with their information? That method should not be hard to implement. You can always setup static routes with Linux-based DD-WRT.

Your description smells like PPPOE.... Smile

It's not ppoe, it's a business att network. They gave us a wan ip address which has to be used connecting to their network. Then we're supposed to configure our public ip block behind that. On our t-1 line we had a cisco router that did this but they're taking it back as it's att's equipment. This sounds like it should be a matter of doing some kind of static routing to fwd the traffic from the public ip block to the wan ip.

It has to do something like this. They recommend a cisco but I was wondering if dd-wrt could handle the routing.

Must customers use Cisco routers to talk to your ISP? Could they use non-Cisco routers?

I suspect the WAN IP was not relevant. You only need to configure your DD-WRT to connect to your ISP's customer network. The WAN IP was possibly for email and DNS setup.

Anyway, I have never dealt with Cisco stuffs nor setup a DNS server for public use.

These are private addresses, not public.

Do you mean netmask 255.255.255.248?
That gives you 5 addresses to play with in the lan.

What are you going to do with these public addresses?

With the netmask given, you have 7 addresses. 2 goes away for broadcast and one for the router. That leaves 4 addresses for hosts.

I presume you want these on a separate vlan without NAT.

VLAN is chipset dependent, so the router model is needed.

The customer had a t1 that this new line is replacing. What we are going to do is put a single router on a public ip behind the main router and nat his computers with that. WE only need one ip but att doesn't sell singles.
