Need to generate new certs for OpenVPN 2.4

I have spent more time than I would like to admit trying to get OpenVPN 2.4 server in new versions of DD WRT (beyond r300016— last version I have that was OpenVPN 2.3 and which works wonderfully) but always with no success. At this point I am beginning to suspect that I really must generate new keys — the original keys were generated in 2013 and there has been a lot of water under the OpenVPN bridge since then.

Can anyone tell me whether I must generate new keys (as a minimum, for instance, to accommodate remote-cert-tls)? If so, is there any need to use easy-rsa 3 or will easy-rsa 2 work satisfactorily?
