I've searched the boards and read the FAQ and the sticky about after flashing. Get to 192.168.1.1 and get the DDWRT page with all the info. Go into any tab and it asks for username and password. According to what I've read here it should be "root" and "admin" without quotes. This does not work for me.

It is possible I have missed something but I'd really like an answer. Thank you for your time in this matter.

Default is root and admin. That's why with telnet the username is root.

To the op, reset it and star again.

In the web GUI, like I remember, the default is admin/admin. In ssh/telnet - root/admin.

It doesn't really matter because when you reset it, it is whatever you put it in to be.
Here it says it's root/password. https://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/faq

Use reset button to reset the router.
Would be helpful if you would post what router and dd-wrt build you are working with.
If broadcom unit, best to ask in that forum.

....
Note: Depending on what router and how 1st install was done it is very common for some dd-wrt builds to load a webif page but not allow you to login..... meaning the usual 'set your uid/pw page' never comes up. You can't navigate pages because it wants you to login. You cannot login because that info in nvram is borked.---- Needs nvram reset!!!

Soft resets were no good. 30 second one got me in with root/admin. I just set it to that as well since I don't want to take any chances.

Now I'm not able to get it pull up a gateway or local DNS. I've tried setting them myself by looking around on here and setting Gateway shows me as "connected". But everything fails to load. So I'm guessing it has something to do with the local dns, which since the automatic isn't fetching it. I could really use a solve for that.

Thank you all for your responses.
