I have read up and down in and out the Peacock thread on getting the proper "Stable" firmware for my netgear R8500, but the wiki seems to reference things that are outdated or no longer apply. To say the least, I am tearing out my skull. The wiki clearly states that I shouldn't be using a beta trailed build permanently, but only as a means to flash a generic "stable" build onto my router after flashing a trailed build. Does this still apply to my router?

Second, I'm not sure I understand if once trying to flash a "Generic" stable build onto my already flashed dd-wrt R8500, what generic version to use. Can I use generic broadcom builds for my router? Could someone please post a link of the proper stable firmware I should be using that isn't a test build? I really would appreciate it, as I don't want to brick my router (which I have already come close to).

Lastly, in the kong builds, whats the difference in files with a "K3"/without a "K3", with a v24/ without a v24, and with a AC_ARM/without a AC_ARM? Which one should I be using? Also, can I use the STD_128k file on my router? I am assuming not, but just want to double check.

For a recommended stable build, I am trying to use a vpn client (Mullvad, which also uses ipv6) with built in port forwarding from the vpn side. Could you please post a link to a build or stable version that would work best with this setup on my r8500? Thank you kindly!

You will find the best build for your router here

The Kong firmware is in folders according to the type of processor used in the routers. Your router has an ARM processor.

Double click on the “Supported Devices” file and read it, especially where it gives you the file name to use for the R8500 router. Do not use any other file.

You will also see subfolders named “TEST/“. Which contains similare files to its parent. Builds in there may have seen less testing, so think carefully about using them if your router is in a critical or production environment.

You will not find a lot of older builds for your router, it has not been around for long enough.

Cheers

Thank you. Just to be clear, I should only be using the dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_R8500.bin files and not the dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin or dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD_128k.bin files correct?

Unfortunately, Kongs latest (where you directed me to, DD-WRT v3.0-r37015M kongac (09/23/1Cool) isn't really a stable build. If I enable https for the gui admin page, it takes about 2 minutes for any page to fully load afterwords. Are there any R8500 builds that just fully work without errors that you know of? Any tricks up your sleeve?

I believe you already have the best dd-wrt firmware available for your router. It is what Netgear recommends....
https://www.myopenrouter.com/articles/r8500-open-source-firmware

This is where you will find the official DD-WRT firmware repository
https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2018/11-17-2018-r37736/netgear-r8500/
But I think you will find it is substantially the same as the Kong build.
Kong lists the differences here
http://desipro.de/ddwrt/Readme.txt

If you want a “Stable” build, look here:
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/stable/
Honestly. Builds since then have been Beta versions.

Cheers

Thanks for the response. A couple questions:
Link 1 has 3 different links on it. Which one should I be looking at?
link 3 (Stable Builds) - Where exactly should I be looking for these builds? Would I be flashing with the firmware found in "dd-wrt.v24>Broadcom>Netgear>WG602v3>mega_generic" or "dd-wrt.v24>Broadcom>Netgear>WNR834B>mega_generic"or something completely different?

Lastly, are you saying that "Stable Builds" in that link have been pretty much beta's?

Thanks again for your reply! Cheers!
