So guys,

i managed to set both my WD1043ND and WDR3600 devices up with the LAN ports connected to VLAN27 and VLAN41 (br1) for WIFI and VLAN51 (br2) for Guest WIFI
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=321364

I am cascading the devices per this example i.e wan port of one, connected to the lan port of the other, which in turn connects its want port to pfsense

https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26297&highlight=cascading+wrt54g++routers

both devices work independently with VLANs working correctly.
when i cascade, with either device as the primary;

LAN network passes through to internet via pfsense
VLAN27 (switch ports on both devices) passes through to internet via pfsense
on the upstream device, both WIFI VLANs work and pass through to internet via pfsense
on the downstream device, the WIFI vlans are not connecting through the upstream device i.e. they don't see the pfsense box

any help appreciated
