I have a asus ac5300 with the latest ddwrt firmware and i constantly get "[dnsmasq] : maybe died, we need to re-exec it" this happens serveral times daily which is super annyoing because it causes internet to drop out until dnsmasq starts up again after crashing. Obviously disabling it is a quick fix but are there any work arounds/settings to keep it enabled? Not sure if its related specifically to this router or what. These are my current settings

there must be something wrong with your config...
why do you need cache min time to live 3600..?

-do you have any other DNS servers specified...may be in those x3 boxes..on the basic setup page..
-any other settings...ignore WAN dns may be..
-SFE enabled ?
-wrong DHCP names that contain intervals or not allowed charters
more details..provided.. picture gets better and better...

if something goes too far and DNSmasq crashes it could be a due to an external factor or misconfiguration...mine on all my routers is rock solid...and more people will share the same ...i guess

all servers will query all of the servers at the same time and will come with the fastest answer...but, those with filtering capabilities with hang the filtered answers and the one without restriction will provide the answer, even if its should be filtered...so not a good idea to use servers with filters and like 8.8.8.8 without...

personally i use 9.9.9.9, as none of your servers above meets my needs...

Even with default settings of 0.0.0.0 for dns servers on the basic setup page and with out any extra commands in the services tab it still cause dnsmasq to crash. Currently i have the same dns servers setup in the basic info section as i do under the services tab. I just added those commands recently as a way to try and remedy the problem. Believe it or not they have helped a tiny bit but not enough to call it fixed. At first i thought it was a hardware problem so i flashed the router back to stock and after that was working great so then i flashed to freshtomato which also uses dnsmasq, ran that for 2 weeks with out any dnsmasq issues that had no issues. i was able to then flash back to ddwrt and identify the dnsmasq issue.I will be home later today and post addition pics of my configuration but i know for sure that i use CTF instesd of sfe

I also have a router on which regularly dnsmasq dies, the router is configured the same as 5 other routers...

On the other routers the problem does not occur.

You can remove min-cache-ttl as it already defaults to one hour
I would also remove cache-size=1000, it is rather a lot (default is 150) and can impact performance

Add to the additional options:
Quote:
log-queries=extra
log-debug
log-facility=/tmp/dnsmasq.log

This will log DNSMasq to /tmp/dnsmasq.log and adds extra log information.

Reboot the router and when it happens again send output of:
Quote:
cat /tmp/dnsmasq.log
cat /tmp/dnsmasq.conf
cat /var/log/messages

Also we need information about general setup and network setup.

could the cache setting in there twice with different values cause issues?

Good question but I do not think so.

Output of syslog will tell us why it's dying. Redundant entries will confuse dnsmasq.

looking at your picture..

-enable ignore WAN DNS
-unless you need it disable SFE (shortcut forwarding engine)
-disable Forced DNS redirection DOT
-in NTP time section remove pool.ntp.org as this field is meant to use IP's instead..
Google NTP time server is 216.239.35.4 ass this IP if so...

For DNS and some other router services, resolving NTP time is vital...if you add an IP, it will be faster and wont be dependent on DNS resolving...so, egg comes first...than the chicken...

So in my log it looks like dnsmasq is not dying at all but restarting incorrectly.

Is still very strange because the problem occurs only on one router

As a reference, try clearing "Server IP/Name" field, hit Save and reboot! If these log entries still appeared, then something else was causing the problem.

You can test connection to ntp.pool.org using Windows:
Code:
C:\> w32tm /stripchart /computer:pool.ntp.org /dataonly
Tracking pool.ntp.org [162.159.200.1:123].
The current time is 10/7/2023 9:06:54 PM.

this has nothing to do with NTP at all
first of all i use the settings on 5 identical routers and only the one router has problems
secondly the NTP servers are polled every 60min as you can see in the logs.

Code:
15:01:21 dnsmasq[13138]: 91 192.168.1.4/42765 query[A] 2.pool.ntp.org from 192.168.1.4
16:01:32 dnsmasq[13138]: 93 192.168.1.4/36187 query[A] 2.pool.ntp.org from 192.168.1.4
17:01:42 dnsmasq[13138]: 95 192.168.1.4/36525 query[A] 2.pool.ntp.org from 192.168.1.4
18:01:52 dnsmasq[13138]: 97 192.168.1.4/45367 query[A] 2.pool.ntp.org from 192.168.1.4
19:02:02 dnsmasq[13138]: 99 192.168.1.4/36940 query[A] 2.pool.ntp.org from 192.168.1.4
19:46:00 dnsmasq[13138]: exiting on receipt of SIGTERM

but dnsmasq is restarted in between and not when the NTP server is contacted.

We better practice reading the logs again
