i’m really glad i’m not the only one wjth this problem and people are taking the time to help each other and troubleshoot this nuisance of an issue because i don’t really have the time. However, i don’t believe it’s a configuration issue or some sort of client on the network causing dnsmasq to die. Like i said i’ve switched between fresh tomato and the asus firmware with no changes to my network and have absolutely 0 issues with dnsmasq. From what i understand fresh tomato is a few commits behind ddwrt in regards to dnsmasq. I really don’t like using any firmware other than ddwrt since it’s a far superior firmware but i can’t keep getting yelled at by my wife that the internet is not working again lol

I think you misread.

The only commits after 2.89 for DD-WRT is for airbag, as already noted (52501 52502).

I have put all settings into GUI. All works fine. Feels like better performance of WiFi and WireGuard, might be due to correct setting of Shortcut Forwarding to CTF.

However "maybe died, we need to re-exec it" issue still exists.

Then I have reset the router and set it from the scratch.
Unfortunately DNSMASQ maybe died issue still is shown in the syslog.

What next can we do? Seems like I am not the only one facing this problem.

btw, is there a way to set up WireGuard tunnel with previous crypto keys for tunnel itself and all peers? For future, I would like to avoid the need to update all remote peers with new config.

About DNSMasq, I don't know anything else to try at the moment.

About WireGuard, copy your private and all public keys and make a screenshot
when you make the peers export the configs and stash same somewhere safe.

so far it looks like config errors has been eliminated as a potential cause of dnsmasq crashing. What’s the next step from here?

As I have already written several times, I have a router on which dnsmasq mysteriously "dies".

1. i have several identical routers with the same firmware version and with the same settings that do not have the problem
2. the router is configured as WAP and all DHCP and DNS clients are supplied by other servers (so dnsmasq does practically nothing)
3. there is no reason visible in any logs, except that dnsmasq is restarted by the watchdog

I suspect that the router has some kind of problem and some interface is unstable.
or that the watchdog does strange things

i would like to rule out hardware issues as the problem. I can confirm that i have two asus rt-ac5300 routers both in seperate houses but same isp and both have the same dnsmasq failure while using ddwt. On the other hand, Freshtomato and asus oem firmware both play nicely with dnsmasq so how could the router have hardware issues with one firmware and not the other ?

I have a asus ac5300 with the latest ddwrt firmware and i constantly get "[dnsmasq] : maybe died, we need to re-exec it" this happens serveral times daily which is super annyoing because it causes internet to drop out until dnsmasq starts up again after crashing. Obviously disabling it is a quick fix but are there any work arounds/settings to keep it enabled? Not sure if its related specifically to this router or what. These are my current settings

"Maximum Cached Entries" is the same as DNSmasq option "cache-size=".
Comment out "no-resolv", "server=" and "min-cache-ttl=3600". Do you really need to set TTL?
Enable Query DNS in Strict Order.
Basic Setup -> DHCP -> "Static DNS 1" to "Static DNS 3" should all be "0.0.0.0".

If you enable "Use DNSmasq as DNS", then you need to disable "Ignore WAN DNS".

Reboot after making these changes.

Above steps should return DNSmsaq to default state. I am using Unbound ("Recursive DNS Resolving"), and I turn off "Use DNSmasq as DNS" and turn on "Ignore WAN DNS". No problem so far.

You might want to post the output of
Code:

nvram show | grep -E 'dnsm|ntp'

I made these settings. Everything has been working fine for 2 weeks now. There were no errors or bugs. How DD-WRT should work!
Thank you – mwchang!

I'm posting my settings. I would like to give recommendations on how much worse/better these settings are than the default?

Why is Recursive DNS Resolving worse/better?

Thanks everyone

Flashed back to 54420 and changed to all settings that were reccomended and even tried with SmartDNS ON and off with these being the results. Appears to happen every 2-3 hours sometimes sooner

Why is Recursive DNS Resolving worse/better?

If your DNS needs are basic, there is really no need for Unbound nor SmartDNS. You can use Google to find out what Unbound and SmartDNS do. Unbound might be a little bit too complicated to setup than SmartDNS.

Glad to hear that your problems are solved.

Flashed back to 54420 and changed to all settings that were reccomended and even tried with SmartDNS ON and off with these being the results. Appears to happen every 2-3 hours sometimes sooner

Did you enable both SmartDNS and Unbound? Notice that in the log, there was competition for using port 53, mainly for DNS service. Were you also using VPN? That might complicate things....

Thanks for the links - very useful! It gives an insight into the nature of the DNS and the difference between the types of queries mentioned.

But...

I posted above the settings of my router - can you tell me if Unbound is configured correctly for DD-WRT?

After your settings, when testing DNS leaks - the test began to show that DNS is configured to my VPN server - which seems to me a good indicator.

Thanks Smile

I was using smart dns and unbound at the same time. Disabling smartdns fixed that error and i am not using a VPN at this time. Router will stop resolving webpages usally after a few hours and force me to restart the router sometimes with an error and sometimes with out while using unbound. I am still able to access web gui from the cable modem, router and switch when this happens

DNS server should be set in Static DNS 1 and Static DNS 2 and remove **everything** from the Additional Config.

Reboot the router afterwards.

Oh and disable SFE on Basic setup page.

If you want acceleration use hardware acceleration: Shortcut Forwarding: CTF; Flow Acceleration CTF&FA

If it does not work I seriously suggest you start fresh, you have a lot of suboptimal settings and probably not done a reset in a long time

Digging back into this, I will have this issue months later after many different new firmware releases--one question about the recommendation to remove Static DNS settings from Additional Config--what if you want to put IPv6 Static DNS in there? The GUI Static DNS 1 and 2 do not support putting in IPv6.

DNS servers regardless if they are queried over IPv4 or IPv6 will return both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
But you can set your IPv6 DNS server on the IPv6 tab

D'oh, I set these up and completely forgot about them. I have Google and Cloudflare there already. I will remove all the DNS settings from the DNSMasq additional options section.

I made some changes from suggestions in this thread last night and dnsmasq still restarted (this is on the newest 54914 build). I know I can't be the only one, so I'm surprised this thread has gone mostly quiet.
