I ditched the OpenNIC servers and am using Cloudflare DNS, as described in this guide. It works well and is faster.
https://dnscheck.tools/ gives it a 100% DNSSEC rating.

I think the main issue in what I had was I had "Local DNS" set to 0.0.0.0 for some reason…

Split and moved topic to Advanced Networking forum. The only relevant SmartDNS documentation is a sticky in this forum and a Wiki in the Official DD-WRT Wiki.
