ok, i have a wrt54g V6. Would it even be worth attempting to go from the micro to a standard? It has 8MB of space and am curious to know would it even be safe to consider doing?

Cannot be done.

v6 has 8MB RAM & 2MB flash. The amount of flash determines what can be loaded. Micro is the only one that will fit.

If it could many would be a lot happier!

Older WRT54GS, such as v1.0 up to v3.0 have 32MB RAM & 8MB flash, which will allow you to run anything, including mega.

WRT54GS v4.0 has 16MB RAM & 4MB flash so you can run standard and below.

Many purchase WRT54GL, also has 16MB RAM & 4MB flash.
They are popular and easily obtainable.

Check out the Supported Devices list for many other makes & models that may suit your needs.
