To answer this question, your question on Sputnik, and any other questions you have about DD-WRT and the WRT series of routers, you need only do a bit of research.....much like the rest of us have done. Here are some starting points.

Leave it alone if there is no need to coverclock. Usual setting should be 216 for some Linksys, not 200.

Ah, come on... Just put it at 300Mhz. It's safe... Rolling Eyes

Hints like this should come when someone refuses to do research first!

Yep, that's what I was going to say....well you do have a sence of humor !

Do the research first on the model and version...but if you are not prepared with jtag tools, etc... stay away from it !!

Here's some other information:

http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/ow.asp?WRT54G

Also check the OpenWrt overclocking page, I wrote a bunch of stuff there.

I totally support overclocking these devices. The RAM seems usually underclocked by default, depending on your model. If you add a heatsink you can overclock the CPU at least 25% safely. This does improve performance, even if your load average is perpetually low (remember processor is always doing something or not at any given time, the load average is a representation of how often it was doing something).

i agree with db90h......

I have tried both overclocking and underclocking my whr-hp-g54. The difference is when i go to the wireless status page and do a site survey, I can detect more wireless network when the WHR-HP-G54 is overclocked.

My next target will be to mod my casing and try to fit in a heat sink and a fan. Then I will try to over clock it to 300mhz

If you managed to mod and overclock a v. 3.2, I'm impressed!! Linksys never made a WRT in a v. 3.2!!! The heat sink and the fan prevent heat build-up, they do nothing to solve errors in the actual overclocking process, which is what you experienced. Did you overclock using the GUI or a script? Did you jump right in to 300mhz or did you work your way up to it?

Like db90h said, these babies overclock very nicely....some even seem to love it....like mine. I have a GS v.2 that is running at 252mhz right now, and it's dead stable, and stays plenty cool with the heat sink and fan. It is just crisper to respond, and seems like a new machine compared to when it was at 216mhz. Now, I didn't just jump to 252 either....I snuck up on it 1 increment (12mhz) at a time using the GUI. I've got JTAG tools all ready, but I'm still hesitant to crank it up another notch to 264mhz. Proceed with caution, but by by all means......proceed!! Half the fun is beating the Grim Bricker!!!

When exactly do you see the extra clock speed come into play? Like, when is it actually useful?

Huh? 216.... ? Are you sure about that?

There are only 2 models that run at 216 there.

I'm runnin' my WRT54GL 1.1 24/7 @225Mhz
I added heatsinks to all important chips, no problems, even 230 works fine.
Don't wanna go further...
