That's not good. First try tftp.exe with your original, following the instructions at note 11 of the peacock thread. If that doesn't work, go to note 6 in the peacock, and if there is no ping response, you will have to jtag....if there is a pinout.

I just got my WHR-G300N from Buy.com..

This is my first install of DD-WRT, are there more detailed directions available?

I was looking at:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WHR-G300N

So I can do it via Web Flash OR TFTP flash? TFTP seems to contain a lot of detailed instructions, while on the web flash there isn't much info.. Is there a guide somewhere on how to upgrade firmware?

Thank you,
Leo

Those really are crappy instructions. There appears to be three ways to flash. The first is through tftp, which simply says, flash the image by tftp. Unfortunately, there is no guidance at all on what you are to flash. Not sure if you should flash the same files as mentioned in the web interface method, or not. Likely you do, but this is not clear.

Then there is the web interface method. Which has more direction than the tftp. I would use this method. Go to the folder for this router and do the preparation file, followed by the dd-wrt bin file. I would try the new router database for guidance on this. Check also the supported devices wiki....it might have a morsel more of instruction.

The serial method is a ton of work, requiring special interfaces.

Thanks Donny..

For the web method, where are the instructions, I can't find them.

The brief wiki says to flash twice with the 2 files listed, how do I download these files?

I went into downloads/v24-sp1/Consumer/Buffalo, and I don't see a folder for the WHR-G300N...

I found some more information here:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=45753

Looks like there are some files in downloads/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/170109/WHR-G300N/

I have two questions about that:
#1 There are 3 files (the first 2 mentioned in the flash wiki, but the last one says WHR-G300N-webflash.bin ... should I use this file or the other 2)

#2 Are these beta files? I don't want to brick my router.. maybe I should just use stock firmware until there are some updates or SP2 comes out... so any idea when that will happen?

Thanks for the help.

In most of the files, there are only two files. I think that three file folder just has one of the files renamed. I would NOT use firmware bin.

These files seem recommended:

Go to the 280209 folder

Flash the tftp file with tftp. That should allow you to access a web interface. Then flash the .bin file with the web interface.

What you are doing is highly experimental. This is new. Ralink chipsets never used to be supported at all. However, as you can see by that thread, some are reporting success and happiness. You have to decide for yourself what you wish to do. Let us know.

So you are saying not to do the web flash, but to use tftp instead?

I was looking forward to doing the web flash as it seems way easier.. I am not sure I have the technical knowledge to do tftp.

Thanks for the help, I really want to upgrade to DD-WRT, but I want to do the web flash as I am worried I'll mess up with tftp.

BTW how did you choose that folder (280209) over (170109) which is listed in the other thread. Those are dated folders right, so maybe I should use the files in 030309 ??

You also said NOT to use the webflash.bin file? Why not? The wiki that describes how to do a web flash, says you have to flash twice.. and only the 170109 folder contains the preflash.enc file... sooo should I follow the wiki using folder 170109, or what? I'm confused now.

the new files are for tftp.exe. You can download that in the downloads section. It is simple to use. However, dd-wrt does require a certain degree of understanding.

The newer files are even MORE experimental and dangerous. You would likely be the first to use them on that router. I would not do so. One of the fellows in that thread stated he had used the february 28 file and it worked well. You don't have the background or skills to be a leader here. Be a follower. Do what someone else has said has worked for them.

If you would rather use the webgui method, that is up to you. Then you would use the old January files.

I think you are confusing the tftp method with the serial flash way. tftp. is the simplest of the three ways described.

Please note that I have never done this on this router either. I am only trying to guide you based on what I do know.

Thanks a lot Donny!

I used the 280209 file as you recommended, and now I have DD-WRT on the route, everything works great!

Here is a summary for other novices:
1. Download TFTP Windows Gui Tool (http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/tornado/Windows-TFTP/tftp2.exe)
.. If not on windows: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/TFTP_flash#TFTP_tools

2. Download current file (firmware.tftp , I used 280209 folder) from downloads/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/

3. Run TFTP Tool, enter gateway IP (192.168.11.1) & select file (firmware.tftp) you downloaded.

*I changed the router password to blank before updating.
*Disable firewall before updating.
*You have to unplug the router from the power source, plug it back in, and run the update within 3 seconds or so, while it powers up.. that's what worked for me.

Again thanks Donny for walking me through this, very appreciated!

Could you clarify exactly what you did with each of the two files you downloaded? I suspect you tftp.exe the .tftp file first, and then a gui was available to put the .bin file from that folder on?

I have linked this thread from the Wiki, so others can follow it, but how each of the files you downloaded is used is not clear.

Glad I could help.
