Is the compressing of CFE something that will only be done on the neutered routers? _________________ Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici-

Read the first post of this thread.....

[EDIT] - please don't ask about a specific model's availability...we will get them posted as we get them tested.

I did read that post. I am not asking about the current availability for a specific model. I was asking if in future CFE compression might be considered for non-neutered units in general. _________________ Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici-

There is no reason to compress the cfe of non-neutered models.
I am not the one working on this stuff be the compressed cfe is to allow a bit more space for the plus(+) builds of the micro versions for more busybox commands. You gain 128K of space.
That will not allow a std version to be able to flash a mega, or a mini to be able to flash std.
In any build above micro or micro plus(+), the busybox stuff exists. _________________ [Moderator Deleted]

It will allow for a little bit more JFFS space, but given that creating a compressed CFE for a unit is more than just "./bcm_compress WRT54Gv3_CFE.bin", it would be too much work for too little gain. _________________ WRT54G v3 - v24 r14471M NEWD Eko - AP

I just had and idea.. (I know what you are thinking).
We have learned that you can permanently change your mac's (to the correct ones) by changing them via telnet or the admin command window, then running the compressor again.
Waddya say, that the same practice or procedure be developed to make the same change to a CFE just no need to compress it?
So.. you can permanently change your mac's in the cfe without the need for jtag.
Over my head in regards to coding & compiling the routine so I can't help other than testing the procedure on my inventory.
Is it possible? (I know it's possible, but would it be practical?) _________________ [Moderator Deleted]

VxImageToolGUI does that for a few models. _________________ WRT54G v2 - std-nokaid 12548M VINT Eko

First, props to Redhawk for all your much-appreciated work on this project!!!! For those of us who unwittingly bought one of the "Neutered" Generations of the WRT54G/GS it has long been a headache, but through the great efforts of many, the vxworks killer and neutered flashing process was born, and we too could (sort-of) have dd-wrt. I have long desired ssh capability on my WRT54G v6, and would love to load the micro-plus-ssh build on my neutered v6.... The question I have is: Does the process for the v5/5.1 work on the v6 as well? I ask because my understanding is that the three versions are identical hardware-wise...

I asked Tornado about this very thing a few months ago. His response was that the V5 and V6 are different. So at this time it is NOT advised to run the V5 compressor on a V6 model.
Sorry...
