Greetings.

I got me a router - TL-WR840N v. 6.2. Tried looking around, the only thing I could find for this particular version are some badly outdated advices for OpenWRT installations, and the firmware links are all expired.

Is there any way to install DD-WRT on it?

Regards.

This device is not currently supported, hardware donation usually required to add support. Only the v1 (Atheros - Chinese Market) is currently supported.

https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/TP-LINK_TL-WR840N_v6

https://forum.openwrt.org/t/support-for-tl-wr840n-ver-6-0/17041 (expand the popular links)

Seems that only the v4 is officially supported currently in OpenWRT.

I presume these are the other threads you found on this forum:

TP-LINK WR840N V6.2

Tp-Link 840N(EU) v6

Gargoyle does *NOT* support this device, either.

Hi,

I already read through this thread on OpenWRT forum - every single firmware link is dead now.

If this comment by LOM is valid this router will never see DD-WRT support:

4 years ago, BrainSlayer was still using an old i7-powered machine for the build server and compiling firmware images took much longer. The device in this thread is a 4/32 device:

Got TL-WR941N v6 (Chinese market). Needs dd-wrt.

Considering the previous thread about the TL-WR840N v6 I commented on, I guess I never pinged BrainSlayer about adding support. But I am sure that having a device in hand to test would be ideal if he were to oblige. Internal photos to verify that the 6.2 is the same as previously linked v6.x wikidevi page would help.

I had emailed the lead developer (BrainSlayer) about this device and the answer I got is because it is not QCA, it will not be supported.

What does QCA stand for?

This model is very cheap and widespread where I live. Runs stable on its latest firmware, but it lacks some functionality I'd like to make use of.

QCA = Qualcomm Atheros. Which functionality do you seek? Considering this is a 4MB flash/32MB RAM device, at most you would have PPTP and/or Wireguard, but no OpenVPN.

For the moment it's port forwarding with IP filtering, and wireless clients isolation. And also DHCP reservation.

There's a multitude of other features as well, like being able to view the list of current wireless clients and their attributes.

In the end, after several failed attempts*, I installed OpenWRT on MikroTik RB941-2nD (that I also had laying around). It was the first time in my life that I saw OpenWRT, and it took some time to get accustomed to it, but I managed to use it for the things I needed DD-WRT for.

As for the TL-WR840N - I re-purposed it as range extender (a role it can do out of the box).

* Version 19 (the latest supported according to wikia (https://openwrt.org/toh/mikrotik/rb941-2nd)) would run kernel image ok, but could not perform system upgrade. I used version 18 kernel and upgrade, then upgraded to version 19.
