hi, all

I am a noob here and i want to do flash swap and ram upgrade on my wrt54g v5.

I just got a a few question before i start this i hope you guys can help.

I have a ST M29W320ET its a 4mb flash chip i was wondering if this would be compatible with the v5?

I downloaded a data sheet of the Flash and compared it with the pin out from the AMD flash and seemed to be the same. But am not sure of course

I also picked up a used a so dimm 256 mb pc 133 sdram chip with a hynix HY57V561620BT chip.

i was wondering if anyone can help me out and tell me if the chips that i have would be compatible before i start desoldering the flash and the ram on the v5.

Plus i have an external programmer which i could use but i would prefer to do a jtag. next is I have Team executer nand x jtag programmer i was wondering if it would be compatible with the linksys v5 router ?

and where do i get the programs to do the jtag

thank you

Hi, I know this router is long gone with the dodo. But I replaced the 2MB on board flash with the 4MB flash MX29LV320.

I can jtag install micro dd-wrt without a problem, everything works fine.

But when I try to install mini dd-wrt or standard firmware, it goes onto the flash. And the router lights look fine. But I can't get into the router it wont connect to anything, wireless or wired.

I've also put version 4 cfe on it with micro and that seems to work fine.

I tried erasing the nvram, doing the 30/30/30 reset, nothing works.

I've got 48LC16M16A2 ram ready I'm going to stick onto it aswell.

Details about which build of DD-WRT you are flashing may help diagnose the issue...

Hi Kernel. I think I used the newest beta v3 available 44715 builds of the firmware.

No, you didn't. The router database is not the latest firmware release source. Please take some time to poke around and do some reading.

Hi kernel. I went along and got the latest release of the firmware, thanks Wink But it still didn't work when I tried to upgrade from the micro firmware (Which worked perfectly), to the mini firmware.

I then replaced the 8MB onboard ram with 48LC16M16A2 and booted the router. The router didn't see the extra ram until I entered this in the administrator, command section of a reinstalled micro firmware and rebooted.

nvram set sdram_init=0x0A
nvram set sdram_ncdl=0x0000
nvram commit

It then picked up 16MB of ram.
After this when I went to upgrade from micro to mini, it worked first time Very Happy
I'm now on standard V3.0 r48402 and again installed first time, no issues.

I'm guessing my problem was trying to install mini with only 8MB of ram! I thought all I needed to do was upgrade the flash memory to upgrade to larger firmware. But it looks like, atleast to me, as it won't install larger firmware without the unlocked 16MB of ram.

Nice work...the old 54G micro firmwares were written for 2M/8M routers. There were also 54GS micro firmwares written for the 2M/16M units. If you would have created a vx killer file using the vximgtool for the GS model it would have worked with he 54GS mini firmware right from the go....but you found the correct workaround for telling the new CFE that it had the correct amount of memory.

I worked with EKO on developing the Micro builds back in the day....it was fun do hardware/firmware mods to get these neutered routers working.

Again...congrats on finding a solution. Now...if you want a real challenge...find a V8 model that has 2M/8M and replace the chips to a 4M/16M or 4M/32M unit so you have a 240MHz super neuter model... Smile

Thanks redhawk Very Happy
You guys did great work with these neutered routers.

I now have a wrt54g version 5 with 4MB of flash and 32MB of ram.

Using 48LC16M16A2 unlocked.
Had to do the broadcom 5352 chip mod to get the full 32MB of ram.

Dunno, what I can do with it, but I'm delighted I got it running.

Dunno if this is out there freely available! I couldn't find a decent example anyway. Just the usual dodgy image of the chip, with no other explanation! Here it is if anyone is interested.
