Anyway, everything seems to work ok as long as I do not enable any form of security of the virtual WLAN. Using WPA or WPA2 does not matter. The only time the SSID is broadcast and I am able to connect to it is when security is disabled.
Note: The main Wireless is set up for WPA2 AES and works fine even when the Virtual WLAN is working or not working.
So far I have tried:
Reset to factory defaults
Changing wireless to G-only instead of G-N-mixed.
Changing wireless channel
Setting the SSID to not be broadcast and trying to connect (this fails)
Tried a couple different firmware, but I saw this on the original firmware too (dd-wrt.v24-25697_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin).
As far as I can tell as soon as wireless security is enabled on that virtual wireless adapter it disappears. I can see the wl0.1 interface in ifconfig no matter what security setting is in place, but I am unable to connect to it.
Any ideas what the next step should be? Is there something specific that needs to be done with this model of router?

I messed around with it some more, and so far the only wireless security setting I can get to work with the virtual WLAN is WEP. Selecting WPA or WPA2 with any passphrase cause the interface not to be seen and not to function.
EDIT: After more fiddling, I flashed a kong build of dd-wrt onto the router and the Guest wifi started working when WPA2 was enabled on it.
I have an Asus RT-N16 vA1. The build of DD-WRT I flashed that ended up working was this one: http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K26/dd-wrt.v24-K26_RT-N16.trx
