A German user over at the SNB forums has posted a bootlog that he got connected over a serial console and it seems that the WNDR3700's firmware is already based on OpenWRT.

I've attached the bootlog if anytbody's interested.

So it possibly isn't incompatible?

i guess so, because it's obviously broadcom based... maybe someone has to contact brainslayer and send him a device for testing.

Can you clarify why the WNDR3700 is obviously Broadcom based? I don't see any Broadcom chips in the previously posted FCC pdf.
Someone else also started a thread for the Netgear WNDR3700 in the Atheros WiSOC based forum

So what I'm hearing is hope is not lost? There may yet be a chance this will run DD-WRT?

yep, it's quite realistic that this device will work with ddwrt & openwrt.

I'm new to the dd-wrt forum and totally unknowing how to go about installing a new firmware (non-vendor) into a router... but since I bought the Netgear WNDR3700 and must now work with the appalling UI I started looking around for an alternative and dd-wrt seems to be the most likely candidate.

Is someone working on a dd-wrt version for the 3700, or is the latest build simply going to work on it?

Is there a way of safely testing this by me?

I don't think that your router will up after the upgrade. Please wait for a compiled version for WNDR3700.

I hope DD-WRT gets ported to this router quickly because the factory firmware is full of bugs. Outgoing VoIP calls do no last more that 30 seconds, even with port forwarding enabled. I do not need port forwarding on DD-WRT for VoIP to work. Static routes and/or their implementation of RIP-2 is not working either. DD-WRT works fine with a Windows 2008 router on my network, but the Netgear firmware does not. I only had the router for less than 12 hours, but I already found a few show stoppers. I am going back to my old Linksys.

I got the VoIP problem fixed by disabling SIP AGL on the router. Static routes still don't work for me.

i would suggest that you contact brainslayer and ask him if he is planing to release a build for this unit.

I asked him and here is the answer:
