Hi,
I have a LInksys WRT54GL v1.1 router.
I currently have a v23 and want to upgrade to the v24sp1.
I'm having a problem with msn messenger, where only when I'm in a chat with multiple people, i will get disconnected from that chat frequently if there is no one talking for a minute or so.
Anyhow, I thought a upgrade of the firmware may help since I'm using one from 9/15/2006.
There are so many different ones to select....how do I know which one to use?
*JUNE 13, 2009: UPDATE*
K I've been using the DDWRT suggested below, but recently I tried going back to the linksys firmware because of some other issue the DDWRT software was giving me. I really want to go back to the DDWRT one but the link someone posted below does not exist anymore.
Is there a newer version that I can use for my router?
Thanks

Thanks, but I'm not having a problem with the DDWRT, it's just that one minor problem where it kicks me out of a chat session on msn messenger when there is more than 1 person in the chat. Other than that, the router and firmware works perfectly for everything else.
That peacock thread seems to be for people having problems withe ddwrt software.
I just need to know, which firmware to download....there is 29 files in that v24sp1 folder for the Linksys WRT54GL v1.1

Thanks, but this file wasn't from the folder where I selected my router and firmware version? How am I supposed to know this one is for my router?
then try to read more in this forum and you will know what is ok for your router _________________ WL-500gP (@300MHz 128Mb RAM + USB_HDD)

RTFM... This is very clearly explained. When you go from OEM firmware to DD-WRT you need to use a version customized for your hardware/OEM firmware. Subsequent updates (generally) can and should be made with the generic firmware. Further while you could simply upgrade to SP1 you should look through the wiki and forums and realize that SP1 had several bugs that have subsequently been squashed. It is recommended to use on of the nightly/SVN builds. 10431 was very stable, 11218 was very stable.

This is kind of a "How do I know you are telling the truth" question.
You know it is right because:
1. He told you it was, and no one said he was wrong..and it you ask for advice, you should be prepared to take it.
2. It explains the right version for your router in the Peacock Thread, which Shawn also kindly provided you with. So you would be able to confirm for yourself that he is right.
3. You have done your homework, and read all the other threads that have asked this same question for this router and you now understand how to pick your firmware...thus rendering you capable of f'ing around with 3rd party firmware.
4. *I* said so. (See number 1 again).
That being said...you will end up really liking dd-wrt, and the folks around here. Though we can be cheeky....

K thanks, i tried that and it works.
Only thing is, it didn't fix the msn issue. Anyone else here with that msn issue?
We need to try and isolate the problem.
Try plugging your computer into your modem (bypassing the router)...that will tell you if it is a router issue or not. (I don't suspect it is)
It could be an MSN configuration setting...but not a user of MSN Messenger...I can't tell you what.
It could be your ISP, it could be the router's P2P settings....try setting the Max Ports to 4096, TCP and UDP timeouts to 120 each on the Administration tab.
Its going to be a trial and error type of debug.
Also, you may want to try using OpenDNS instead of your local ISP's DNS as your primary.
[EDIT] - one more thing...try changing your MTU's down into the 1300-1400 range on the Setup>>Basic tab.
