Anyone who has been around this forum for a while will notice the many contradictions. While it can be frustrating, that is the way it is. This website is maintained by the dd-wrt team. The forum, on the other hand, is composed of users, who are separate from the team. We have no control over them, and at least they let us post things as we see things(which is not always the way that they see things) and don't try to control us. In a perfect world our roles would compliment each other, but if you can find such a place, I suggest you move there.

An example of this is the router database. The dd-wrt team controls the content....and the users in the forum have completely different recommendations. Simply put, the builds recommended in the database are wrong, and the ones recommended in this forum are right for broadcom. Another issue is that all releases for the last several years are Beta releases. You will be using a Beta release if you are using ddwrt on your router. And, prior to complaining in the forum to other users about this, understand that you have exactly as much power to change this as any of us - none at all.

DD-wrt is what it is. And no one is interested in hearing you bitch about it. Especially if you expect others to change things for you. If you want things done differently, then do the work. No one here owes you anything.

Additionally, dd-wrt is marvelous in that it supports though different flavours, many diverse router types. This is not easy, and to make dd-wrt work on such a wide variety of routers is....complicated. There WILL be a steep learning curve. If it is too much for you, you aren't ready for third party firmware.

To deal effectively with these discrepancies, you need to understand quite a bit, and much of it is not intuitive. Before you touch your router, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ ALL THREE BROADCOM FORUM ANNOUNCEMENTS!

ESPECIALLY the PEACOCK ANNOUNCEMENT!

I have sat back and watched people post question after question, repeatedly making silly mistakes and flashing garbage builds simply because the don't take the time to read the basic information that they need to do this THE RIGHT WAY according to the users. While is might make intuitive sense to rely on other parts of the website, there is a lot of misinformation out there.

For Broadcom, rely on this forum, and the wiki information applicable to your router. For initial flashing the best advice is in the peacock announcement note 5: follow the wiki!

It has gotten to the point that there are only a few knowledgeable people who hang out here to help or guide others. And when you see the 1000th person who says..."hmmm. I have wireless problems after flashing build 13064", or post completely inadequate information (build? router? setup?) or has not followed the instructions in the wiki for their router, or bothered to search the wiki for the good info that is there....one gets tired of saying the same thing, over and over, to the people who for whatever reason simply will not do basic reading for themselves...and then complain because they aren't given the exact answer, or because no one replies at all. If the answer already exists, and you are pointed to it (eg: READ THIS!) why do you need it served to you on your private platter?

People will be helpful around here, but after you dine and dash, I will still be here helping others...and I don't have the time or energy to fix a problem for you that you could have easily fixed yourself, had you paid the entry fee - READ the
THREE Forum announcements.

So do it. Starting with these:

These are the official forum rules:

This is WIP atm. As changes need to be made, we'll modify them or add to them. Anyway the rules have to be followed from now on!

  • This is NO official support forum for paid versions/licences of DD-WRT and therefore you can´t claim official support here.

  • We reserve the right to ban anyone who wilfully violates the forum rules, as access to our support forums are a privilege and not a right. A banned customer is still entitled to support from the support system.

  • The views presented by individuals on this forum are theirs alone, and should not be interpreted as representig the views of Newmedia GmbH, or Newmedia GmbH staff, owners, or affiliates. Indivduals shall be responsible for what they post on this forum.

  • While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts. Please refrain from swearing, as it only serves to deter others from reading further. If your post has been removed, our decision is final in these matters.

  • We reserve the right to remove offensive posts without notice.

  • Wait a reasonable amount of time before bumping your post. For general questions this should be 24 hours. For specific troubleshooting issue, use 12 hours as a guideline.

  • Discussion of illegal activities, linking to, or the posting of pirated software is not allowed. However, we do allow a link to freeware or shareware if the file/utility is applicable to the discussion at hand.

  • We reserve the right to remove any file or link in a posting that is known to have caused damage to or has bricked a unit

  • We also do not allow posts that are sexual in nature or violate dd-wrt community standards. The dd-wrt Support team shall be the sole arbitrator of what does and what does not violate community standards.

  • We do not allow people to post threads or to send private messages or emails to users here that advertise or solicit any products, services, funds or donations. Explicit advertising and solicitating in signatures is also prohibited. You may however, offer your privately owned used hardware for sale in the Search & Find, Sales & Offers forum. Commercial and/or "for profit" sales are not allowed in any dd-wrt forum.

  • A link and promotional text for a site that is not commercial and does not contain product(s) and/or service(s) is allowed, provided the site is not sexual or does not violate dd-wrt community standards. The dd-wrt Support team shall be the sole arbitrator of what does and what does not violate community standards. (Examples include sites about drugs and/or sex.)

  • The forum is for dd-wrt issues to be discussed in public. Public discussions assist everyone. Do not PM forum moderators seeking private assistance for your router issues. Such PM's will be deleted without further notice.

  • Multiple or repeated posting in order to increase your post count is not allowed.

  • Avatars/Pictures and Usernames that may be confused with official staff or to offensive avatars/pictures (e.g. with sexual relation) are not allowed.

  • Discussion or desemination of religious beliefs, or material, of any nature, will be removed without comment.

  • Also while these rules cover most common situations, they cannot anticipate everything. Consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure these forums are not disrupted or abused in any way.

The following are the official forum guidelines:

This is WIP atm. As changes need to be made, we'll modify them or add to them.

Don't complain if you don't get any reply (or a very short one from the Mod´s), if you don't follow these guidelines

General rules:

  • Releases prior the current stable aren't supported. So upgrade to the latest stable or recommened BETA release first. Or if you are told to "upgrade 1st" to the latest BETA (at your own risk!)
  • People expect you to work on your problem too. If it is obvious that you haven't done any work yourself, you might not get much assistance.
  • Our forum is divided into the different platforms and our corporate partners. Be sure to know the SoC vendor (Atheros, Broadcom, Ralink, etc) of your router. A good resource for this info is our Supported devices list in the wiki or google.
  • Read the announcements and any relevant stickies at the top of the forum. Also, there is a Router database and a WIKI. Look in these resources first for your issue, especially if it is related to wanting to know HOW to do something.
  • Search first. There are over 70,000 threads (threads, not posts) in the Broadcom forum alone. Chances are, an answer you are looking for has already been dealt with.
  • If you are responding in someone else's thread with a similar problem to assist the OP, your comments are welcome. But if you intervene into someone else's thread before they have resolved their issue, expect that you might get no replies, or run the risk of having your post deleted. In short, don't hijack threads.
  • Build threads deal with test builds. Use the thread to report information, not to seek it. Specific issues or successes that you have found that relate to that build are welcome but do not ask for assistance with a configuration problem with your router.
  • You will receive no support on 3rd party instructions & software and for damaged/bricked routers resulting of it (e.g. optware packages).
  • Use proper spelling, no capslock, and make a reasonable attempt at punctuation and grammar when posting.
  • Pic size max of 768x576 or 576x768 pixels, but make sure your pictures are clear and of good quality. You can alternatively use an image hosting site to link your pictures via the img tags.
  • Don´t ask when the next Beta will arrive. It´s there when it´s done!

Guidelines if your problem still exist. Open a new topic:

  • Post your request in the correct forum. Be sure to know the SoC vendor (Atheros, Broadcom, etc) of your router. A good resource for this info is our Supported devices list in the wiki or google.
  • Provide as much information as you can
  • Create a informative topic subject that briefly but concisely explains your problem.
  • State your build number, version and build date. Do not state "I am using the latest build".
  • State your router model, and version/revision in your post. If you are unsure of this information, also post your serial number and FCC number.
  • Clearly explain what you have done and what happened, or what you want to do (e.g. network drawings, serial bootlogs, whatever that could be usefull). Remember that we are not there to see what is happening, so you have to describe it in detail. But no stories of life plz.
  • Post screen shots of the relevant pager of the dd-wrt web-interface. It will help to clarify your issue.
  • Be patient. Certain issues require a certain amount of expertise that not everyone has. You might have to wait for the person who knows the answer to your question to show up.
  • Edit your topic subject with a leading [Solved] or [Fixed] when your problem is fixed.
