Seems that I damaged Rx by short circuit with Vcc. Resistance between those pins is too small and Ctrl+C has no effect anymore. All hope to recover my router is gone Sad

I just bought three of the nokia CA-42 adapters for about 2.50 each, shipped, from here (NFI):
http://www.focalprice.com/MA046B/Nokia_CA42_USB_Cable_Black.html

I am thinking for that price I should put one in each router I own!

Please note LOM's sage advice in another thread:

LOM wrote:
No there is no fixed standard for the colours of the wires and obviously not on the number of wires either.
My first CA-42 had 3 wires and the ones I bought later had 5, the picture in my post above is from one of those.

You can carefully remove the plastic molding of the phone connector and see where each wire is going and find out which colour the respective signals are on. Schematic of the Nokia phone connector here: http://www.hardwarebook.info/Pop-Port

I am interested in people's WAN port serial adapters. I am likely going to turn one of these cables into a WAN port device. Post some picts!

I received my ca-42.. three wires.. white, green, and yellow.

green = ground
white = tx
yellow = rx

my problem now is it works perfectly on an xp rig. Win 7.. no go.. The drivers are installed and according to the device manager, all is working.

Both putty & hyperterminal in win 7 says it can not access the port.. I've tried com 1, 3, 5 & 6. 3 & 4 are occupied. My usb to rs232 (9 pin) serial adapter (com 4) works fine with win 7.

I hate win 7 Twisted Evil

Try unplugging the USB from your computer and plugging it back in. You might have to relaunch the program. I found I had to do that even with Win XP.

Here is some info on using serial on Win7:

Just for the sake of getting the info in this thread.

On Windows XP:

Hyper terminal Setup
In Windows XP, Click Start Button-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Communication-->HyperTerminal
Enter a name for the connection, Click ok
Choose com port you adapter is plugged into, Click ok
Set:
Bits per second = 115200
Data Bits = 8
Parity = none
Stop bits = 1
Flow control = none
Click ok
Click File-->Save As, and select a place to save it to so you don't have to enter the settings again.

Putty Setup
After installing putty, run it
Serial line = The COM port your using for serial (ie. COM3)
Speed = 115200
Click on Serial under Connection
Serial line to connect to = same as above (Serial line)
Speed (baud) = 115200
Data bits = 8
Stop bits = 1
Parity = None
Flow control = None
Click Session
Enter a name for your connection under saved sessions
Click Save
Click Open

OK...I am finally getting around to building one of these Serial cables from a CA-42 (nokia knock-off) from Ebay.

I cut the connector end off and found 3 wires. Blue, Red, and Orange.

Using an Ohm meter I determined that my Orange Wire is Ground.

Then using the "guess" method, I found the Blue wire gets connected to the router's Rx line and the Red wire gets connected to the router's Tx line.

When I plugged it into my XP rig...the cable was not recognized and no drivers found during the PnP process.

I downloaded a utility determining the attached hardware (UVCViewer)
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/UVCView.x86.exe

Then downloaded the Prolific Driver from here
http://www.prolific.com.tw/support/files/%5CIO%20Cable%5CPL-2303%5CDrivers%20-%20Generic%5CWindows%5Callinone%5CPL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v130.zip

So...

Orange = GND
Blue = Rx
Red = Tx

Once loaded and connected...my laptop sees the unit attached to COM8....configured Putty....and all is well.

Hope it helps.

Hello,

I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what's happening, maybe somebody will be able to help me...

I've connected my spare WL500W to a FTDI FT232BM module (http://www.nbgelin.com/485.htm).

If I connect it to my pc's usb, I'm just able to transmit to the router, but I can't receive anything from it.

That's it, if I boot my router and press ctrl-c various times, I can see that the boot procedure stops. If I type "reboot" the router reboots or I type "go" it resumes the boot. On the terminal console... nothing. I've tried with Ubuntu and minicom, cutecom, putty and XP with putty. Just a black screen, no output from the router.

I've re-done all the soldering and checked all the connections. Everything seems ok...

Is there something I'm missing? Can somebody have an idea of what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you in advance...

connect tx and rx of your adapter to each other and see if your keystrokes are echo'd to the terminal screen.. If so.. then there is a problem with the tx circuit of your router. If not, then there is a problem with your ttl adapter. Assuming you are using the right pin for tx on the router connected to rx of your adapter

Good thinking! I was able to see the echo by connecting the RX to the TX pins on the TTL adapter...

Looks like my TX circuit on the router is damaged and there is nothing I can do about it...

At least I know that I can send commands to the router... blindly!

Thank you very much for your help!

You still need a ttl adaptor (3.3v)

Here is pinout of a 9 pin rs232. Won't matter cuz your ttl adapter should have the correct mating pinout.

Thank You very much for telling me that, I have ordered a ca-42 cable, but I was reading in this thread it doesn't work with Windows 7, will it work using XP Mode on Windows 7?

I know it's ancient, but I'm using this as my terminal.
