Firmware Version
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/21/09) mega - build 12533

I got a odd problem, I tried to search all over the forums with someone with the same problem.

The problem I have is that the HDD works perfect as a NAS. I can access it, upload files to it etc. Download from it.

But if I let it be for about 1hr, it spinsdown. So it just a green "led" on it that tells me its on, but just idling.

When I try to reconnect to it, it halts, completley. I need to disconnect the USB or the Power from the hdd to access it again. A reboot of the router works too.
I have tried to have it EXT2/3 and Linux-swap with FAT32 (This is not really a FAT32 partition except its a backup partition for my wii games, legal in sweden okey Wink) and also tried to make it EXT3, Swap, JFFS and OPT folders. Same issue.

Anyone have an idéa? It always works fine until it spindown/idle. I have made it not able to read FAT32 also so it ignores that partition.

Kind regards

Does the HDD have it's own power supply?

I found that using a powered hub with my 320gb Passport is the best way to go. Also, you should format the drive RAW:

yes it does. I do not want to touch the FAT32, it should be alone. I want to use the EXT3 to use as a NAS.

Hmm... a powered hub? Doesn't the Passport have the option to turn on or off spindown?

Yes, that tutorial is for FAT32, but follow the first step. You want an unallocated RAW partition. This will remove all the manufacturers tools like Sync and system restore. Then format and partition the drive. It worked for me..

I have a version of this drive that I have been using for a while with dd-wrt. I had to do the sdparm trick a while ago for the same reason, so I can confirm that it works.

In fairness, the only commands that are needed are these:

To check the settings on the drive:
sdparm -a /dev/sdX

To clear the value that causes the drive to sleep:
sdparm --clear STANDBY -6 /dev/sdX

Will try out.

Fast question, since I don't want to touch my external harddrive with Optware packages.

Is it possible to use a USB-key to have the OPT folder so I can keep the hdd untouched?

Since this router got 2 USB ports.

Guys this is easier, it's been faced before with the SLUG (NSLU2) ... the solution doesn't stop the spin down but configures the kernel to use it properly, i.e wakes up HDD when needed.

See: http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/FAQ/DealWithAutoSpinDownOnSeagateFreeAgent

You can use the following in your start up script to enable on all drives:
for f in /sys/class/scsi_disk/*; do echo 1 > $f/allow_restart; done

This has worked for me and I think is better than forcing the HDD to never spin down.

This is much better than the previous method.
It works for me. Thanks a million.

This works for me with a Seagate 250 GB Freeagent external hard drive. However, I did have error when I first copied and pasted to the command box. With a little guessing (I never used Linux commands), it worked with a semicolon at the end behind "done."

Thank you for such an easy solution.
